image06/09/04 - Police Presence at SF Police Review Commission

by upton sinclair
The following is a brief reportback from the SF Police Review Commission meeting, mainly focusing on the heavy police presence. It is difficult to say why the police were out in such force, since the folks that were there in regards to the illegal arrests made during the attempted street party the night before were on their best behavior. Maybe it was simply a matter of them attempting to intimidate folks, or maybe it was simply a way for the cops to milk the city for more overtime....

So as far as I can see, Dennis Kucinich is the real deal. In an earlier column I called him an "odd little man." I regret that slight. After meeting and speaking with him, he's not odd at all. He's lucid and sticks to his bedrock principles, which, in theory, are the same as his party. So why have the Democratic bosses and their stalwart members swung behind Kerry the Waffler when Kucinich is their man?...

textBiotech Saves Lives: Do SF Protesters Oppose This? by maybe biotech is good
The SF Chronicle says we are "anti-cancer research." Pro-biotech protesters said "biotech saved my grandma." Many of us were mistaken that this protest was only about GMO food, but it was mostly medical research. This is a chart of biotech medicines that were being discussed at the Bio2004 conference. Is our only response Starhawk's tired rhetoric about how "bayer gives us cancer"? How can we plan to attack people doing research like this? Are we lucky only 200 p...

Yesterday at Moscone, I saw these guys standing outside the main entrance. There was a lot of good conversation happening there. I had hoped that the Reclaim the Commons participants had an intelligent critique of biotech, but I was wrong. I talked to at least 20 people and all of them had the most ignorant things to say about the science they are trying to destroy. It was upsetting to me....

by upton sinclair
This is a picture of SFPD officers lounging after they had arrested 5 people during last Saturday's breakaway march. They went a bit overboard on police presence on Saturday and have continued to do so the rest of this last week, which is nice for them when they get their next paychecks, but means a lot of money being sucked from the city budget....
