Wednesday Police Commission - Jail Solidarity Updates

by indybay
Updates from jail solidarity 06/09/2004
12:00PM - Last 2 people charged with felonies are released from 850 Bryant. People are watching movies and footage from yesterday's Reclaim the Streets/Police confrontation on the freeway overpass near 850 Bryant. Jail solidarity continues inside 850 Bryant, with stories of abuse and intimidation of Jane and John Does by SF Sherriffs filtering out.
11:00PM - People leave Police Commission to be confronted by 13 SFPD vehicles waiting outside City Hall.
9:50PM - As of the last update from City Hall, the Police Commission had not yet reached the protester agenda item.
9:10PM - Legal Update: Women have been moved to general population. Men will be moved as well. No access to telephones. The Sheriffs Dept. has proposed that 2 protesters will be allowed to speak with attorney Joanne Warwick. They would be called out by their nicknames.
9:01PM - Approximately 40 people headed to city hall for a police hearing that is happening there right now. There are still 20 men and 18 women in prison, and an additional 2 people that have felonies. They have begun fingerprinting them to figure out their identities. A lawyer was let in, but was not allowed to talk to them unless she had their names. The lawyer got a list of the action names of the detained people from the legal team so that she can speak with them.
8:13PM - Approximately 80 people are still gathered in front of 850 Bryant. The prisoners inside are expressing jail solidarity. There were reports earlier that the police officers were entering the cells and removing the women one at a time with pain compliance, and putting them in seperate cells. The lawyers have gone inside to find out what is happening. There is still music and food outside 850 Bryant St.

The NLG is also reporting that groups of heavily-padded male police officers have set up tripods w/ cameras outside of prisoner's cells as a form of intimidation. They are periodically turning off the cameras and entering the cells 5-6 at a time, in full riot gear with shields, to extract prisoners 1 and 2 at a time and taking them to unknown locations. So far there are 18 women still incarcerated and 20 men who are refusing to divulge their identities.
7:00PM - Police Commissioner's Meeting in Room 400 in City Hall: "Demand the Release of the Prisoners." Call the jail at: (415) 575-4418. A special call has been put out for people to join the Jail Solidarity Rally at 850 Bryant, which began at 6:30PM: "Bring Instruments, Noise and Friends."
