Stanford Hospital Workers to Vote on Union
On July 31, in a display of anti-union sentiment, Stanford barred union members from delivering a letter to their hospital administration. Supported by Assemblyman Ira Ruskin and Assemblywoman Sally Lieber, union members appealed to hospital management to bargain in good faith. This week an administrative law judge ruled that the union failed to proved to Stanford that it still represents the employees; they will vote anew on representation in September.

Federal Court Upholds Ban on Voter Registration in VA Hospitals
After four years of legal review, the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals has upheld the Veterans Administration policy barring voter registration drives inside its hospitals. The VA's policy is seen by many as being in clear violation of the First Amendment and may still be appealed. Veterans for Peace member Lennox Sweeney, who fought for the right to register veterans of any party at VA hospitals, died while the case was being reviewed.

Indybay spoke with the Assemblywoman who is urging hospital management to remain neutral and refrain from employee intimidation. Service Employees International Union/United Healthcare Workers-West is the larg...

We Built This City on Rent Control
After suffering for years from the abuses of absentee landlords, East Palo Alto organized as a community in order to create rent stabilization in 1984. Many years later Page Mill Properties is using legal loopholes and bullying tactics that threaten apartment tenants and the very core of a city built on rent control.

Autonation NO-SHOW at the Bargaining Table
By R. Robertson
Workers and their families asked, "Autonation, Where Are You?" when the giant car dealer backed out of scheduled negotiations at the last minute. Talks were to be held at the Mountain View, CA dealership today, but Autonation tried to move the meeting to an East Bay location, far from an exuberant rally.
