KPFA radio to celebrate 75th anniversary

By Lynda Carson - April 12, 2024

On Monday, April 15, 2024, KPFA radio, 94.1 FM in Berkeley, will celebrate it’s 75th birthday with it’s friends and supporters.

KPFA started broadcasting on April 15, 1949, as the first Pacifica Radio station, and continues to remain the flagship station of the Pacifica Radio Network including KPFT, KPFK, WBAI, WPFW, and many affiliates all across the nation, plus Puerto Rico, Canada, Zurich, Paris, and London.

KPFA is the very first listener supported radio station in the United States of America. Unlike National Public Radio (NPR), KPFA does not have commercials. That’s right! KPFA radio is listener supported with 60,000 watts of power, and does not have commercials like NPR or PBS does.

The programs on KPFA are delightful. There are many wonderful DJs with KPFA, and some fantastic music programs. Additionally, there are numerous talk-shows, and programs that have some really interesting interviews that are very educational.

At times there have been some controversy in the network, including the time when George Carlin (comedian) performed his 7 dirty words routine years ago that was broadcast on Pacifica, resulting in a lawsuit F.C.C. v. Pacifica Foundation.

The past 75 years reveal that KPFA and the Pacifica Radio Network has struggled to remain on the airwaves through the years, and the history of KPFA and the network may be found here. But it has always managed to pull through somehow, allowing it to live longer to fight another day, and to remain on the airwaves.

The KPFA - Pacifica Struggle in 1999:

According to the history archives of KPFA, “On July 31, 10,000 Bay Area residents demonstrate in Berkeley, demanding the reopening of KPFA, which had been shut down by Pacifica’s then Chair Mary Frances Berry and Executive Director Lynn Chadwick in a dispute over control of the station. Chadwick and Berry relent and KPFA begins broadcasting again in early August.”

Indeed. Here we are around 25 years later, and thankfully KPFA is still broadcasting with 60,000 watts of power throughout much of northern California, and locations around the world on the web. Happy Birthday to KPFA radio, 94.1 FM, and 75 years of broadcasting.

Note: I saved some vintage posters from the KPFA - Pacifica struggle during 1999, and took some photographs of the struggle occurring at KPFA during 1999, around 25 years ago, that I posted for this story.

Correction about KPFA poster, plus KPFA's Iconic Moments

(Link to KPFA's Iconic Moments is further below)

By Lynda Carson

Based on further research and recollection, I believe that my vintage KPFA poster promoting KPFA On The Air, was made in 2000. During 2000 I was interviewed numerous times by Wendell Harper at KPFA on his show called "What’s The Verdict?" I was the interim press officer for Just Cause Oakland at the time promoting a just cause anti-eviction initiative in Oakland. I believe that I obtained the KPFA poster during one of the times I went to KPFA during 2000.

My Research Reveals:

The documentary called KPFA On The Air was released in 2000, and screened at the UC Theater on July 28, 2000. It was broadcast on PBS’s Point of View on September 19, 2000.

See links below…

“KPFA On The Air,” narrated by Alice Walker, played at the International House Auditorium on December 2 (In 2000 I believe.)

It was followed by a panel discussion with Celia Alario, Larry Bensky, Amelia Gonzalez-Garcia, Matthew Lasar, Sisan Stone, and Walter Turner.

Some links about the KPFA - Pacifica struggle of 1999

(see links further below.)

By Lynda Carson

I spent a number of days in front of KPFA radio station during the summer of 1999 after the lockout occurred at the station. Like many others, I was listening to the KPFA news broadcast that evening when the struggle aired live on the radio. Dennis Bernstein of Flashpoints was being dragged away and being forcibly removed by some security guards in KPFA, as he yelled out in fear. He was facing retaliation for discussing what was happening at KPFA back then.

To say the least it was a very chilling moment that I could not ignore, and found it hard to believe, even though it was very real. That very same evening a friend and I went to KPFA and stood in front of the station taking turns holding a protest sign. I still have a photo of my friend, but it was dark and the photo did not turn out very well. There were others there also that evening as we all stood in the dark under a street lamp wondering what we can do about this horrible situation unfolding our beloved radio station.

As it turned out, I took the time to head back to KPFA repeatedly during the KPFA - Pacifica struggle and three-week lockout, and took some photos each time I went there. Each time it seemed different. Tents started arriving with people camping out on the street in front of KPFA. A fellow with a banjo started appearing, and often he can be seen at many events in the Bay Area through the years. Two people eventually handcuffed themselves to the front door of KPFA, and could be seen sitting on the ground. I have a beautiful photo of them, and a friend of mine recognized them as some old Berkeley schoolmates from years ago.

Often a truck would be parked in front of KPFA used by the guest speakers to speak the public, the media, and the demonstrators that would appear to support the KPFA staff that were locked out of the station. It was very exciting, and there were many different gust speakers every time I made it back to the struggle.

Then one day, suddenly a group of people showed up with a ladder. The former editor of Street Spirit, Terry Messman, led the charge up the ladder to the balcony of KPFA that day, and others quickly followed suit. Meanwhile, those at street level struggled to keep the ladder from falling over, as people were heading up to the balcony. The look on people's faces in the crowd were of astonishment at that moment as they watched what was happening, and looked up towards the balcony as people were heading up the ladder. I recall that at times I had to hold my cheap ass plastic camera from Walgreens over my head to keep taking pictures above the crowd in front of me, and I was hoping for the best. I kept hoping that I would capture the moment somehow, even though I was not certain the I got the image I was looking for.

Then I noticed that some cops suddenly appeared on the roof looking down on the balcony as the people were starting to unfurl a banner. It seemed like the cops got to those folks on the balcony real fast somehow, and started grabbing them, and stopping them from fully unfurling the banner. A fellow wearing a hat was halfway up the ladder, when suddenly he noticed the cops were above him, as they were grabbing people to arrest them as he was looking upwards. At one point the cops on the balcony grabbed the ladder and tried to take it away from the people holding it down below.

It all seemed pretty surreal at the moment as I kept trying to take some photos to capture the moment. I kept hoping that when I had the film developed that it would reveal that I managed to capture what was happening in those quickly moving moments.

From what I recall, generally when I showed up at KPFA during the lockout struggle of 1999, there were two long rows of cops standing across the street from KPFA, in front of a tire business. One row of cops would be in front of the other, if I recall correctly. They may have been standing there with billy clubs in their hands to let the crowd know that they were serious. I do not recall them being around the moment people used a ladder to go up to the balcony, which may explain why I did not see any cops attacking the people trying to hold the ladder in place.

Regardless, I was very happy when Pacifica relented, and allowed KPFA to go back on the air, without the canned music or speeches Pacifica played on the airwaves during the three-week lockout struggle at KPFA radio.

Perhaps by knowing what has happened in the past, it will help to figure out how to deal with this kind of crisis if it ever happens again in the future.

Possibly, a few links below will help to shed some light on what was happening at KPFA and Pacifica as the crisis hit a fever pitch... What a world.

Bensky Fired; Sunday Salon Cancelled; Staff Reprimanded
BY JEFFREY ST. CLAIR - ALEXANDER COCKBURN

Larry Bensky, host of the weekly “Sunday Salon”program on Pacifica, has been fired by Pacifica Executive director Lynn Chadwick, and his program cancelled. In a letter to Bensky, Chadwick states that the firing is because of Bensky’s “repeated” violation ofPacifica’s policy of not discussing internal matters on the air.

Bensky devoted seventeen minutes of his two-hour program last week to Pacifica’s firing of KPFA’s popular station manager, Nicole Sawaya, and the controversy, which has resulted. He read a statement by the KPFA staff criticizing the firing, refuted statements by Chadwick about him and his situation (he was previously “terminated” by Pacifica in December, and re-hired after hundreds of protest calls and letters to Chadwick and board chair Mary Frances Berry), and also read a statement he had prepared for delivery to the Pacifica national board at its Berkeley meeting in February.

1999-08-05 04:00:00 PDT BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA -- Proclaiming "there ain't nothing like the real thing," Berkeley's KPFA was back on the air live Thursday, after a three-week hiatus during which canned music filled the airwaves normally used for eclectic free speech.

"We are back and we are very excited about it," said announcer Philip Maldari as he began a discussion with KPFA supporters on the conflict that has kept the station in turmoil for months.

Journalists Inspire Support For Community Radio
NORMAN SOLOMON

Last Wednesday afternoon, radio journalist Aileen Alfandary stood on the sidewalk in front of the building where she has worked for many years. She looked out of place. The deadline for the KPFA evening news was fast approaching — but all the doors were locked.
I asked Alfandary to describe what had happened to her the night before. She replied with a quiet voice: "I was arrested on charges of `trespassing’ in a newsroom where I’ve worked for 20 years."

Some of her colleagues were also among the more than 50 station supporters arrested on the night of July 13. The owner of the Berkeley, Calif., station — the Pacifica Foundation — had ordered KPFA employees to choose between journalism and job security. They chose journalism. Now they’ve been locked out.

Management problems and divisive racial politics have followed Mary Frances Berry from the U.S. Civil Rights Commission to the Pacifica Radio Network
By JUDITH COBURN

You might expect that the biggest enemies of progressive Berkeley radio station KPFA-FM would be right-wingers in Congress, who for 50 years have railed against the left-wing Pacifica network of community-based, listener-supported "free-speech" radio stations.
But the radio network that survived McCarthyism, and more recently attempts by Sen. Jesse Helms, R-N.C., to cut its public funding, is facing the greatest threat to its existence yet, at the hands of its own leadership. And its primary antagonist is not a right winger, but Mary Frances Berry, the black scholar and civil rights activist who chairs both the Civil Rights Commission and the Pacifica Foundation.

Vintage KPFA Posters From 1999 KPFA - Pacifica Struggle

By Lynda Carson - April 15, 2024

As KPFA, Pacifica, and others celebrate the well deserved 75th anniversary of KPFA and Pacifica today, a stroll down memory lane with some vintage posters from the 1999 KPFA - Pacifica struggle that resulted in 10,000 protesters or more hitting the streets in Berkeley to save KPFA, may be of interest to the community.

Below are a few links from the Library of Congress to some vintage posters from the 1999 KPFA - Pacifica struggle that occurred that summer.

The resistance and the spirit of the community at large that supported KPFA and it's staff during the struggle to save KPFA in the summer of 1999, is still alive and well in these vintage colorful posters from around 25 years ago.

Happy Birthday to KPFA and Pacifica on it's 75th anniversary birthday celebration!

Enjoy...

Pacifica ran my KPFA 75th anniversary story - sort of....

By Lynda Carson - April 16, 2024

On Monday, April 15, 2024, I received an email from the Pacifica network thanking me for sending them my story, stating that they were going to publish my KPFA 75th anniversary story on their Pacifica Network homepage, with photos.

They also asked if I had more photos I could send them, which I declined to do so because I did not have what they were looking for. They wanted a celebratory photo or 2 which I do not have.

I suggested that they might try to see if anyone from KPFA had any celebratory photos to share with them, from after the 1999 KPFA lockout ended.

I also requested that they send me a link to the story on their webpage when they post it.

However, I did not hear back from Pacifica for some reason. So I did a little research, and I found my story published on the Pacifica Network homepage.

By all means I am not trying to pick a fight with Pacifica, or anyone, but I felt just a little bit disappointed after I found my story, and saw what they did with it.... What a world.

For those who may be interested, see the email below from Pacifica, and a link to my story on the Pacifica Network homepage.

Plus a link below, to my original KPFA 75th anniversary.

Peace-

Hi Lynda,

Thank you for the KPFA Anniversary story and the pictures!  I will be posting them on the Pacifica Network homepage.

I see the pictures you sent of the Pacifica struggle.  I understand you have a section about that.  Would you also like to send another photo or two?  It seems there should be a more general one or celebratory one for the top/main photo.

Update: Special thanks to Stephanie Schubert of Pacifica for working with me to revise my story about the 75th anniversary of KPFA and Pacifica, by adding some photos and an additional vintage poster from the year 2000. Pacifica pulled my KPFA anniversary story they published

By Lynda Carson - April 19, 2024

To say the least, life is predictably, unpredictable. That's right, Pacifica pulled my KPFA anniversary story that they published.

Earlier today I received an email from Stephanie Schubert of Pacifica. Now she is claiming that Pacifica needs permission from KPFA to run the story they published of mine. Plus she suddenly needed more information about myself.

Apparently, this is more complicated than what I was led to believe since I was first contacted by Stephanie Schubert of Pacifica a few days ago.

If anyone has clicked on some of the Pacifica links below that I posted on my IndyBay story, and discovered that my KPFA 75th anniversary story originally published on IndyBay https://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2024/04/12/18864941.php , is no longer available on the Pacifica web links, the email below may help to shed a little light on what has happened.

It turns out we need to check with KPFA before we post this.  To get more info, are you writing this as a volunteer for the station, fan, friend, employee etc...?

I will let you know if we get a green light.

Best,
Stephanie

(My vintage KPFA - 1999 "EMERGENCY DEMO," KPFA - Pacifica struggle poster that was posted individually on the Pacifica Network, was also pulled. I did not post this on my IndyBay story, but discovered it last night on the web.)
