Remembering Michael Mears
Remembrance Gathering April 11 at City Hall
The recent passing of our friend and comrade Michael Mears is both sad and notable for many reasons. That Michael's loss is tragic and unacceptable is beyond contestation. But as we pause to remember his passing, let us not forget those who remain. According to the Homeless Census and Survey, there are approximately 2,000 men, women and children unsheltered in Santa Cruz County every night. Yet in the entire county there are fewer than 200 emergency shelter beds available.
So let the living memory of those who have passed remind us of what we must do as a community to prevent more needless deaths. Though Michael may have not found shelter in this world, we live in hope that he has found it waiting and welcoming in the next. Let his loss be our light and our motivation and perhaps in that way he will not have died in vain. And he may now, and finally, be at peace.

So sad that he died, was he homeless? When they are only 200 beds for 2000 homeless people, this is very sad. People are very ignorant about people who need help. If someone have no ties to relatives anymore or have not many friends, he or she will be abandoned from the society. I have the idea that mobile homes could be constructed for homeless people, made out of waste, horses transporters or other transport vehicles on wheels.
The space should be big enough for a bed, maybe a little washing unit or little cooker,heater, space to store the property under the bed, the walls should insulated against freezing, cold weather and water. Someone could collect money for materials for this kind moveable homes on Goandfundme, forget about the government, they will do nothing, they dont care. Moveable little homes would be good, because if someone dont like this kind of little homes or get trouble with some people the owners of the moveable home could move to a better, more friendly place.

I knew Michael for many years and his passing came as a shock. He was always friendly and courteous, but I sensed he was never a happy man. How did he die?
