Intersectional Feminist Non-Profit, Double Union is now accepting new members!

by Double Union
From (December 5, 2016) until (December 18, 2016, 10 pm Pacific time), we’d like to invite people interested in becoming Double Union members to apply for membership! Read on for more context about DU and this process, and please feel free to share this with friends who might be interested!

We are a community workshop where women (trans, cis, queer, straight, and not-fitting-into-those-labels/other) can work on projects in a comfortable, welcoming environment. Today we have about 200 members and are planning to accept many more. Our space is at 1250 Missouri St. in Lower Potrero Hill, San Francisco.

DU members host a wide variety of events in our space (you can see some photos from past events on our Twitter). Some events we’ve hosted include:

writing workshops
button/pin making
feminist book club
game nights
lightning talks
sewing workshops
working on income taxes together
lockpicking workshops
circuit hacking
yarn project time
art nights

Double Union is a great spot for coming to read, work on coding/writing/art/craft projects, or for quiet coworking. The space has a large room with a full kitchen, and a cozy upstairs loft with a library. Besides workbenches and shelves lining the walls, there are couches, tables, and chairs that members frequently reconfigure to fit the needs of workshops and events. Our space is fully ADA-compliant, with an elevator that reaches both floors of our unit.

Besides events, members can visit the space at anytime to use the shared tools and equipment. Inside the space Double Union has:

full electronics workbench
sewing and serging equipment
standard tools like: rills, files, dremels, saws
HandiBot CNC
Type A machine 3D printer
Silhouette Cameo vinyl cutter
Shapeoko CNC machine
screen printing station (exposure unit, a large paper cutter, screens, squeegees, drying rack)
printer
projector setup
library with a focus on books on: programming, design, how-to/DIY, feminism, zines

We also purchase additional equipment and tools according to member interest.

Membership qualifications
Double Union welcomes members with a broad variety of interests, skills, identities, backgrounds, and histories. What we have in common is a set of values (base assumptions)http://www.doubleunion.org/base_assumptions and an interest in supporting each other and Double Union. We want to accept more members who share our values and our commitment to building a safer space together.

To keep the focus on a great space for women, all members must identify as women in a way that’s significant to them. Members must also be old enough to carry out any responsibilities. Guests of members may be any gender or age. We specifically encourage bringing (supervised) children to the space.

How much does it cost to be a member?
Double Union covers rent for the space and other expenses with member dues. Dues are sliding scale: $10, $25, or $50 per month (you choose what to pay based on your financial situation, and you can change the amount whenever you need to). We also offer scholarships ($0 dues) for members who have financial hardship. The amount you pay is not related to how much you can use the space or the type of membership. We use Stripe to automatically process credit/debit cards.
How to apply

Read through https://www.doubleunion.org/membership and click on the pink “Apply to join” button near the bottom!

After clicking the button, the next page will ask a few questions about you and your interest in DU. Be yourself! We don’t make decisions based on accomplishments, interest in tech, or income level, but we’d like to know who we’d be sharing our space with.

As part of the application process, we would like applicants to have met at least one current DU member, so if you haven’t met some already (such as at past events), try to meet members in the next few weeks (such as by attending an upcoming DU public event). We’ll try to respond to your application within six weeks or sooner.
