Afghanistan: Still Occupied by US Troops on "Independence Day"
Afghans’ views are divided with regards to their thoughts and feelings towards Independence Day. Some feel that Afghanistan is not an independent state since it’s still under occupation; foreign troops are present in the country. Today some Bay Area residents of Afghan descent said that the tradition of displaying the flag on Independence Day represents cultural pride, political feelings aside.
Independence Day in Afghanistan is celebrated in August to commemorate the country's independence from Britain in 1919. A participant at a celebration in Palo Alto, California on Saturday, August 21 said, “It is a day when Afghans celebrate their emancipation”.
