Richmond activists wrap up renter protection signature gathering campaign

Just Cause Renter Protections and Rent Control Will Protect Richmond Renters

By Lynda Carson - June 2, 2016

Richmond - On Thursday June 2, the Fair and Affordable Richmond coalition submitted more than 5,000 signatures with the Richmond City Clerk to qualify the Coalition’s Rent Control and Just Cause Eviction Protections Ordinance for the November ballot. Members of the coalition and Richmond tenants spoke about the Ordinance in front of Richmond City Hall, and how it will protect Richmond renters and the community.

The Richmond City Clerk and Contra Costa County has thirty days to determine if the Coalition has collected the necessary 4,198 signatures needed to qualify the Ordinance for the November 2016 ballot.

The members of the Fair and Affordable Richmond coalition and the Richmond Progressive Alliance are very excited about the success of their efforts in collecting enough signatures to place the proposed renter protection ordinance on the November ballot.

It is a sweet comeback for the supporters of rent control, tenant activists and renters in Richmond after the California Apartment Association stole Richmond’s renter protections last September with BIG Money.

Richmond City Council member Gayle McLaughlin said, “I am very proud of our volunteers who got thousands of signatures.  Canvassing was a very positive experience because there is a widespread understanding that this housing crisis is out of control and needs to be addressed.  Getting this measure passed will help prevent displacement and stabilize our neighborhoods, so that we can continue Richmond's transformation.”

Longtime Richmond resident Jim Lynch said, “If any Bay Area city needs rent control, it’s Richmond. Our beloved rust belt city has per capita income of a bit over $25,000 per year. With rents soaring everywhere, it’s one of last affordable places to live in the Bay Area. Without rent control it won’t be much longer.”

Tenant activists and renters hope that the efforts to have rent control and just cause eviction protections in Richmond will not be sabotaged again by the efforts of the multi-billion dollar real estate industry, and the wealthy California Apartment Association.

The Fair and Affordable Richmond Coalition is made up of Tenants Together, Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment (ACCE), Richmond Progressive Alliance, SEIU 1021, AFSCME Local 3299 and the California Nurses Association.
