Injured Agraquest Biotech Worker David Bell Tells His Story

by Labor Video Project
The biotech industry employs hundreds of thousands of workers in the United States yet the health and safety of workers and communities could be in jeopardy. Injured Agraquest biotech worker David Bell talks about his experience at the Davis based company which was owned by Pam Marrone. He recounts the lack of health and safety production in the genetic engineering laboratory. Bell reports that fungus and bacteria was brought into the country and although he reported it there was not action by government agencies that do oversight in importation of such substances.

On 12/12/2008 Labor On The Job interviewer, Steve Zeltzer interviewed Agraquest biotech worker David Bell. David talks about his work at the Davis, California based biotechnology company Agraquest, owned by the former Monsanto scientist and former NovoNordisk Entotech owner, Pam Marrone.

This video is just a small fraction of what happens to employees working in the biotechnology field. More and more evidence is emerging that this industry in not as safe as we are being led to believe.

Moreover, this industry is not being held accountable for the injuries, illnesses, diseases, maimings and even death that befalls their employees; biotech companies merely claim, “Trade Secrets” in denying the injured worker his or her constitutional rights to know what he or she has been exposed to in the workplace environment.

David Bell discusses among other things:
•How the lack of proper health and safety protection led to his contamination from bacteria and fungus at Agraquest.
•His sickness after he was only with the company for 5 months and 9 days and the horror that has followed; 4 major sinus surgeries, loss of an intact immune system, and the continual infections he has had to endure over the years.
•How Agraquest did, and still is covering-up their responsibility for his illnesses and diseases.
•The corruption and the breakdown within the California workers compensation system.
•The failure of health and safety regulatory agencies; such as the EPA and OSHA to regulate the biotechnology industry.

ADDITIONALLY, Becky McClain, injured molecular biologist from Connecticut spoke of the dangers in working in the biotechnology industry during the 2009 Workers Memorial Day event in San Francisco.

Mrs. McClain also encountered the same plight as David Bell; NOT KNOWING what she had been exposed to THAT MADE HER SICK ( industry's "TRADE SECRETS"), non-compliance of: the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, agencies within the state of Connecticut, including U.S. Federal Agencies.

The fungus; histoplasma capsulateum; which causes the human disease histoplasmosis, was identified in David Bell's blood serum by the Mayo Clinic laboratory in Rochester, Minnesota.

Although Agraquest denied any and all connections to histoplasma being related to David Bell's employment with the company; it was discovered that four (4) days after David Bell became ill on January 18, 1999, the Agraquest scientists on Pam Marrone's United States Patent 6,004,774 began signing away their interest rights on this patent. The patent states, "Additionally, an antifungal composition comprising an extract produced by B. subtilis strain ATCC 55614 may be used to treat human fungal diseases in which the disseminated disease propagule is a conidia, for example, Aspergillus sp., HISTOPLASMA sp., and Tinea sp."
