Rigoberta Menchú to Speak at Delta College Oct. 22, 11 a.m.
Rigoberta Menchú, Nobel Prize winner and courageous advocate for human rights in Guatemala and elsewhere in Las Americas, will speak at Delta College's Tillie Lewis Theater on October 22 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. She is a survivor of the Reagan administration-engineered genocide of the Mayan people in Guatemala.
The genocide occurred under the "scorched earth" policy of the "born again butcher," Jose Efrain Rios Montt. One of the most vicious tyrants in recent Guatemalan history, Rios Montt was the U.S. backed general, dictator, and a former president from 1982-83. A graduate of the U.S. Army School of the Americas, he was proud of his political philosophy of "beans for the obedient; bullets for the rest."

Tillie Lewis Theater, Oct. 22nd
(Stockton) 1992 Nobel Prize winner, Ms. Rigoberta Menchú, will speak at Delta College’s Tillie Lewis Theater in Stockton, Oct. 22, from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. This free presentation is sponsored by Delta’s Cultural Awareness Programs (CAPs).
“No other Nobel Prize winner has ever set foot on Delta’s premises,” says Delta College English instructor and CAPs committee member, Pedro Ramirez. “This will be an historic event and an honor for our campus.”
Ms. Menchú, 49, was awarded the 1992 Nobel Peace Prize for protesting against human rights abuses during Guatemala’s brutal civil war (1960-1996). Her book, I, Rigoberta Menchú (1983), is the autobiography of a poor Guatemalan woman’s experiences during those turbulent times.
The memoir propelled her into a position of prominence for a person of meager background. Ms. Menchú became the best-known representative of the indigenous people of the Americas, a figure who could call on the pope, presidents and the UN Secretary-General.
Ms. Menchú will also be available for a “Meet & Greet” from 9 – 10:30 a.m. in Upper Danner Hall, and available for a book signing (after her speech) from 12 -12:30 p.m.
