Peskin, Maxwell, Dufty and McGoldrick filed Initiative on Combustion Turbines - dirty deed

by Francisco Da Costa
Aaron Peskin, President of the SF Board of Supervisors, Sophina Maxwell, Bevan Dufty, and Jake McGoldrick should be ashamed of themselves. As Espanola Jackson, long time Bayview resident stated before the Rules Committee - July 17, 2008 - these four Supervisors are Racists. That statement coming from Espanola Jackson - says it all. These four Supervisors again and again - have discriminated against the Bayview Hunters Point - and should be ashamed of themselves - never voting for what is right for our Bayview Hunters Point constituents.
The Bayview Community, the Green Party, the Brightline Defense, Environmental Justice Advocacy, People Organized to Win Employment Rights (POWER), the Sierra Club, Green Action, and many more decent advocates and constituents - do not want any Combustion Turbines (CTs) placed closer to the Bayview Hunters Point area.

Combustion Tubines (CTs) use very expensive fossil fuel and what is more - pollute.

Some how Aaron Peskin, Bevan Dufty, Jake McGoldrick who do not live in the Southeast Sector - for some strange reason keep backing Sophina Maxwell the District 10 Supervisor - who is supposed to represent District 10 - but has no clue what she is doing.

The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) took a vote and do not want the CTs any where near the Bayview Hunters Point. The SFPUC is the lead agency or department that is the deciding authority. But dirty politics keeps messing with the affairs of those that want to do right - by the people.

The Bayview Hunters Point area - already suffers the ills from very dangerous particulates, the aggregate and sand facilities, million of trucks plying and spewing particulates, the near by Hunters Point Superfund, the atrocities committed by Lennar Corporationon Parcel A and so on.

The SFPUC formerly led by Susan Leal for some strange reason favors the CTs. Susan hand picked her cronies - the likes of Barbara Hale - who time and time lied to the SFPU Commissioners about the CTs.

The California Independent Systems Operator (CAISO) recently prepared a document that agrees with the community that the CTs are not need.

San Francisco has a demand of about 960 Mega Watts (MW) and with the Jefferson Martin Transmission Line and newer replaced transmission lines - in and around the City and County of San Francisco - can handle any energy demand.

Within two years the Pitsburg-Potrero TransBay Transmission line with bring about 400 MW and the City and County of San Francisco will have more then sufficient energy - with a lot to spare.

In the interim - if this City had a Plan which is does not - to really address Clean Energy such as Solar, Wind, and Wave - we could have achieved a lot - but we have not.

We have failed as a City to have an all embracing plan - instead favoring some entities because some folks are on the take - and have thus compromised on many Clean Energy - projects.

8 minutes before the dead-line to submit an Initiative linked to the November,2008 Ballot Measure - Supervisors Aaron Peskin, Bevan Dufty, Jake McGoldrick and Sophina Maxwell - committed their dirty deed.

With intent to harm the constituents of the Bayview Hunters Point - they knowingly submitted an Initiative which will become a Ballot Measure - and have defied the constituents of San Francisco. A ballot measure that favors the CTs. What morons!

Their Initiative favors the Combustion Turbines - favors pollution - will be fired up for more then the required hours. The most disgusting aspect of this "proposed project" it will cost more then $350 million and this City and County of San Francisco - does not have that type of money.

The alternative is for Mirant to shut down the dirty CTs it has and is willing to do.

Retrofit the other CTs and bring them up to standards. Strict pollution requirements will force Mirant to phase out and close their power plant within a couple of years. The City and County of San Francisco can save their millions.

Once the TransBay Transmission line is ready we as a City can enjoy - steady power and more.

We, the City and County of San Francisco - have four CTs sitting in a ware house in Texas. Each year this City pays over $250,000 to house them.

We have been doing this since the year 2000. That is when this City because of Sophina Maxwell who chose the CTs rather then - hard cash as did other cities and counties.

The settlement due to the Enron scandal and other entities who adverse impacted San Francisco. In this case the Williams Company could have paid us money - but, as I said the little knowing, District 10 Supervisor Sophina Maxwell - chose the CTs.

In the interim - powerful forces want to replace most of the SFPU Commissioners who have voted against the CTs.

If this is not politics as its worst - I do not know what is.

These four Supervisor most of them inept and who have come together to commit the dirty deed and working against the people - must be removed from office.

Sophina Maxwell really thinks - she is smart - one must just watch her speak - spewing diatribe and sentences that say - nothing at all. Recently, she said to give her a month to read a document - linked to the Combustion Turbines!

We the community do not want the Combustion Turbines (CTs) in our community:

1. The Combustion Turbines (CTs) will pollute.

2. It will cost over $350 million to place them. The City does not have the money.

3. The CTs will be placed on SF Port Property - they do not serve Maritime Purposes. These
CTs fail the Burton Act and are against the mandates that govern Public Trust Laws.

4. Four Supervisors are challenging the constituents - by abusing their power - sneaking
in the Initiative at the last moment - without any Public Dialog.

5. Aaron Peskin, the President of the BOS must lead the way but this Supervisor has not and
and this is one glaring example. The other 3 Supervisors have failed - miserably.

6. The CTs will add to the pollution of the Bayview Hunters Point. The community already
has the largest amount of cancer, and other diseases linked to polluted air.

7. The Sierra Club, Environmental Justice Advocacy, Brightline Defense, the Green Party,
POWER, Green Action, Espanola Jackson and many more do not favor the CTs.

8. The CTs could be sold right now for $20 million and the money added to the General
Fund. Entities in Texas want to buy them. I have spoken to the SFPUC Manager about
this issues at Public Comment before the SFPUC.

9. These Supervisors Peskin, Dufty, Jake, and Sophina are NOT following the Precautionary
Principles - the guiding force behind every project that adversely impacts human and other
life.

10. Now, is the time for all San Franciscan to stand united and vote against the Combustion
Turbines (CTs) - that use very, very expensive fuel and will kill our children and elders.
