Vigils Across CA Remembering Lawrence King
email received Friday at 8:11pm
Dear Friends-
A vigil in Ventura is underway right now to remember Lawrence "Larry" King, the 15 year old E.O. Green Junior High student who was shot Tuesday, February 12 in Oxnard, CA. Larry was declared brain-dead Wednesday after he was shot in the head twice by a fellow junior high student at school, and he was taken off life support this morning. According to friends, Larry was perceived to be gay and gender non-conforming and had been bullied at school. The suspect, a 14-year old student, has been charged with attempted murder, and the case is being prosecuted as a hate crime.
Several more vigils are being planned around the state. GSA Network is working with many other partner organizations to help mobilize people to organize vigils and other community actions, so that we remember Larry's life and advocate for safer schools for all youth. We are also working with GLSEN to get all of this information up online, as soon as possible. In the meantime, here are the confirmed vigils we know about in the next week.
