The Red Scourge

by Terrrie Frye
The Christian Fundamentalist youth group Battle Cry descended upon San Francisco this weekend.

As a child growing up in the Fifties, I had always heard stories about the Red Scourge, that it would descend on the United States some day, and it frightened the children. Then, the Red Scourge then was Communism.

Yesterday, March 9, 2007, I was frightened and saddened by another Red Scourge that IS the children – Battle Cry http://battlecry.com/, with their leader Ron Luce http://www.acquirethefire.com/atf0506.php?pageid=104, a man honored by both Jerry Falwell and George W. Bush.

These are the same people who are responsible for “Jesus Camp,” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesus_Camp, where youth actually worship cardborad cutouts of George W. Bush!!!!!!!!!!! They believe that he has a mandate from God to run our country (into the ground!). They are training an army to fight a religious war – against Islam. This is an arm of fundamentalist Christianity that is teaching youth hate and intolerance, and there is no place for them in ths country. Here is a disturbing trailer from “Jesus Camp” - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RNfL6IVWCE. I recommend Bill Maher’s discussion of “Jesus Camp” which includes a Christian and a Muslim - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGceAojHR6o&NR.

Approximately 25,000 teenagers were bussed into San Francisco to protest and save themselves from pop culture, homosexuality, pro-choice, religious freedom and anything else that resembled San Francisco values. We were all reminded of the similarities to another group of children from the Thirties and Forties – Hitler Youth!

Here are just a few photos from the demonstration. This link has more photos - http://www.flickr.com/gp/81834230@N00/6hFy68 .
