Farr and Eshoo back Bush and Israeli attacks
On July 20, area U.S. Representatives Sam Farr and Anne Eshoo voted in favor of a
Republican-sponsored resolution (H. Res. 921) supporting the ongoing Israeli
bombardment of Lebanon and the Gaza Strip and praising President Bush -- who has
blocked international demands for a cease fire -- for "fully supporting Israel" in
its actions.
Republican-sponsored resolution (H. Res. 921) supporting the ongoing Israeli
bombardment of Lebanon and the Gaza Strip and praising President Bush -- who has

its actions.
The resolution even lauds "Israel's longstanding commitment to
minimizing civilian loss and welcomes Israel's continued efforts to prevent civilian
casualties," directly challenging detailed reports by Human Rights Watch, Amnesty
International, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights which document heavy
Israeli bombing of Lebanese neighborhoods and the civilian infrastructure -- in most
cases with no apparent Hezbollah military activity nearby -- which have killed more
than 300 civilians in the past week. The resolution even goes so far as to radically
reinterpret the United Nations Charter by claiming that Israel's attacks on
Lebanon's civilian infrastructure is an act of legitimate self-defense under Article
51 despite a broad consensus of international legal scholars to the contrary. The
resolution also tries to blame Syria and Iran for the conflict in language that
could be used by President Bush to justify a U.S. attack on those countries.
Through this resolution, Reps. Farr and Eshoo appear to want to undermine the
credibility of human rights groups, the UN and international law in an effort to
advance the militaristic agenda of the Bush administration and its allies
Please protest their attack on international law and human rights by calling their
