Embattled UC Santa Cruz Chancellor Denice Denton died today after jumping from the 44th floor of San Francisco building, authorities said.
Denton's death is being investigated as a suicide by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in San Francisco. Her body was found on Saturday outside the Paramount Hotel -- where her partner, Gretchen Kalonji, lives. The luxury rentals are located on Mission Street at Third, across from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
She was 46.
Denton died at 8:17 a.m. A guest at a nearby hotel reported the jump, police said. Denton's mother was on the scene today and has been notified by authorities, police said.
Denton may have been living in the building, police said. She had been provided a 2,680-square-foot home on the UC Santa Cruz campus, the subject of a story in a San Francisco Chronicle series this spring examining perks and pay in the UC system.
The outspoken lesbian was criticized for having the university foot the bill for $600,000 in renovations to her campus home, including a $30,000 enclosure for her dogs, a new dishwasher, sub-zero refrigerator, and updated bathroom. She also outraged university union members when her partner, Kalonji, as hired to work for the UC system at a six-figure salary.

It is even more troubling that tripping and falling are suggested by a flip individual. I have not seen the roof of the building from which she apparently jumped, but I doubt that in our litigious era that access to a rooftop, where one could trip and readily fall off, would exist. Let's not be disrespectful of a woman who greatly cared about her community and university.
