Today: Screening of Emmett Till Documentary at Grand Lake
Screening today only in Oakland!
A local woman saw a powerful documentary about Emmett Till (murdered
for being black, ostensibly murdered for looking at a white woman in the
50's in the South.) This movie is in part about the intersection of
gender, race and class, an intersection we all live at whether we know it
or not. But no one who made the film had money for publicity; the
theatre was virtually empty. So this local woman, Rosalind Patton, wanted
other folks to see the movie, and so she used her ___own money___ to rent
the Grand Lake Theatre in Oakland for the day. It's "The Untold Story
of Emmett Till" and there will be five screenings of the film (today, Tuesday)
only, at 1 p.m., 3 p.m., 5 p.m., 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. The admission fee is
$5 for adults, $3 for students.
In the middle of this Oscar season, if you can, honor this woman's
financial risk for love and truth, and her damn willingness to rent a
theatre to show a movie that's not even her movie.
