A hit-and-run motorist ignored a red light early Thursday and killed a 26-year-old bicyclist, police said.

The accident happened at 2 a.m. at Polk and Geary streets, said Inspector Pat Tobin of the hit-and-run detail. The cyclist, Sarah Tucker of San Francisco, died at 9:46 a.m. at San Francisco General Hospital, authorities said.

Police said the motorist, a man driving a black Honda CR-V, was going west on Geary and ran the light. Tucker, riding south on Polk, ran into the Honda in the middle of the intersection.

Tobin said witnesses heard the rider shout loudly "Hey!'' just before the accident. Witnesses said the Honda was left with a large scrape on the passenger door.

He said auto repair shops, insurance companies and auto parts yards should be on the lookout for the Honda. Anyone with information is asked to call police at (415) 553-1641 or an anonymous tip line, (415) 575-4444.

Tucker was from Santa Cruz and lived in Portland for a while. She moved to SF about a year and a half ago.

I also wanted to say how truly sorry I am for all the friends and family. A friend of mine was killed by a drunk driver last year so I sort of understand. I'll be thinking of all of you who feel her loss.

"She was totally wild, loving, energetic, creative, spunky, loud and gregarious."

1) MEMORIAL RIDE THURSDAY FOR SARAH TUCKER

We are deeply saddened by the news that Sarah Tucker, who was 26 years old, was killed while riding her bicycle last week. According to witnesses, a hit-and-run motorist ignored a red light at the corner of Polk & Geary Sts. and killed "Tucker", as she was known to friends. (To read more about Tucker's life, see an article in yesterday's Examiner at http://tinyurl.com/czfm8)

The SFBC is helping to organize a memorial ride this Thursday, January 19th. We will meet at 5:30pm at City Hall (on Polk St. steps) and ride to the intersection where she was hit, and then to the Hall of Justice. Please join us to remember Tucker, who was a regular bicyclist, and to demand that the Police Dept. do all they can to catch the motorist who killed her. Police are looking for a black Honda CR-V with a large scrape on the passenger door. Anyone with information is asked to call police at (415) 553-1641 or an anonymous tip line, (415) 575-4444.

How long will the police look for Sarah's killer and the car that struck her? As long as it takes?

It would be nice if our police valued people before property. Any sketch of the killer yet? Or are sketches only for killers who rob their victims?

There was more effort to find a homeless guy who dropped an old, broken flashlight in Starbucks. Any surveillance cameras at that intersection on Geary, or within a few blocks? The car and/or driver might have been photographed.

How sad to read of Sarah Tucker's death. Had the driver stopped, it may have been viewed as an unfortunate accident. But, when that driver chose to drive off, he made the accident a crime. My heart goes out to Sarah and her family and friends.
