New Pacific Lumber Oldgrowth Logging Plans

by save ancient forests! (saveancientforests [at] mail2protect.com)
Contrary to a recent Times-Standard article, Pacific Lumber has more available old-growth groves and they continue their efforts to cut them.
Three oldgrowth timber harvest plans (THPs) have been filed by Pacific Lumber since a misleading article claimed that the company was logging the last of it's available oldgrowth. The article was published by the Times-Standard newspaper of Eureka, Ca.
While it is true that the highest quality Marbled Murrelet habitat is being systematically logged, there are certainly many remaining oldgrowth stands. Two of the logging plans are on the Bear River side of Rainbow Ridge and one is on Monument creek near Scotia. The THPs clearly outline the companies plans to log ancient groves of Redwood and Douglas Fir. The majority of the logging will be clearcutting. At least one of the plans calls for "broadcast burning" and the use of herbicides on hardwood trees. The struggle isn't over yet...

Pacific Lumber is sytematically logging the remaining highest quality unprotected Marbled Murrelet habitat. The Humboldt population has been give an 80% chance of extinction in 60 years taking into account the continued logging of thier habitat. If the attempt on the part of timber interests to remove federal protection from the Marbled Murrelet is successful, PL could gain access to thousands more acres of ancient forests that are now protected in "Marbled Murrelet Conservation Areas" or MMCAs. The MMCAs are relativly near the famed Headwaters Grove.

Pacific Lumber is logging their highest quality Marbled Murrelet habitat currently available to them. If the efforts to delist the the bird are successful, its likely that PL will go after the currently protected Marbled Murrelet Conservation Areas (MMCAs). The MMCAs contain large oldgrowth stands that have been protected since the 1998 Headwaters deal.
