LABOR SWEEPS LOCAL RACES,
DELIVERS 70% NO VOTE ON 75

Alameda County union activists gave Arnold Schwarzenegger the
worst reviews of his career yesterday, meeting the goal of a 70%
NO vote on Prop 75 and contributing to the termination of his
phony reform initiatives.

Going into the four-day Get-Out-The-Vote weekend, Alameda
County volunteers had stepped into the limelight with 3,000
shifts. More than 2,000 volunteer shifts were worked for GOTV
beginning Nov. 5. Nearly 70,000 door hangers were stickered, and
Labor Council phones autodialed 38,000 phone numbers to remind
voters of their polling places.

On election day, 600 volunteers passed through Teamsters Local
70, Hayward Firefighters, IBEW 595, SEIU 790 and CUE halls for
dispatch to precincts. More than 100 rides to the polls were
given on Sunday and Tuesday through the Interfaith Committee,
CBTU and APRI. A complete report is being compiled and will be
available very soon.

Labor-endorsed local measures and candidates won closely
contested races -- for which union members should take a bow.
Thank you, everyone!

* EMERYVILLE LIVING WAGE for Hotel Workers passed, 54-46%.
UNITEHERE Local 2850 worked all five precincts over the four-day
weekend and on election day. Like the Governator, the Chamber of
Commerce saw its mean-spirited campaign rebuffed.

* JOHN FRICKE FOR EMERYVILLE CITY COUNCIL -- Fricke, a
neighborhood activist and former public defender, overcame
personal attacks and a whisper campaign to win election to the
City Council. SEIU 790, building trades, and Labor Council
precinct walkers walked door-to-door with the candidate on
election day. Considered an underdog throughout the campaign,
Fricke finished just 21 votes behind a popular incumbent to take
the open seat.

* ANA APODACA FOR NEWARK CITY COUNCIL -- Again, fearful
opponents dropped last-minute attack mail. Building trades,
Ironworker, and Laborers walkers worked with Alberto Torrico to
comb precincts for identified voters and deliver the vote.

* MYRNA TRUEHILL & PAUL FRUMKIN were re-elected to the Hayward
School board with lit-drop and direct mail help from classified
employees and the labor council.
