CAL lawmakers send marriage bill to Governator

by SUN (SaveFreedom [at] yahoogroups.com)
BOTH houses (Senate and Assembly) of the California legislature have narrowly passed the Leno bill to legalize same-sex marriages. Now Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has three choices: (a) sign the bill; (b) veto it; or (c) allow it to become law without his signature.
SF Chronicle says:
" A landmark bill to legalize gay marriage passed the Assembly
by a single vote Tuesday [Sept. 6]
and now goes to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger,
who has not said whether he will sign it.
The measure passed on a 41-to-35 vote,
with no support from Republicans.
The author of the bill, Assemblyman Mark Leno, D-San Francisco,
worked desperately throughout the day to find the votes needed for passage. [....] "

SF's LGBTI Center held an open meeting later on Tuesday evening,
to explain what's happening with this bill;
and with two proposed anti-marriage amendments to the California state constitution.

[ Comment by SUN:
If the marriage bill becomes law,
then fundi-fascists could circulate a petition for a referendum on it,
thus putting the bill on the ballot for approval or disapproval by voters.
If this happens, Cal voters in 2006 might find THREE marriage-related propositions on their ballots
(one pro-marriage plus two anti-marriage).
This may confuse voters,
who may therefor vote NO on all three items. ]

Whenever a ballot carries an issue related to sex
(such as queerness or abortion),
you can expect increased turnout by religious reactionaries
(fundis, Catholics, Mormons, Muslims, etc.).

That's usually good news
for the Republican Party.

But increased turnout in June 2006 is
largely wasted,
as there are few (if any) direct contests
between a Republican and a Democrat.

Increasing Republican turnout
matters most
in November elections.

So the Party would benefit
if one of the California
hate amendments
could be delayed until November 2006.....

Associated Press report on
same-sex marriage bill:
(09-07) 01:43 PDT Sacramento, Calif. (AP) --

Gay rights supporters cheered loudly from the gallery as California lawmakers became the first in the country to approve a bill allowing same-sex marriages [ Sept. 6].
But their celebration may be short-lived.
The legislation could be vetoed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger,
who has expressed an acceptance of gay marriages
but said it's an issue that should be decided by voters or the courts.
"He will uphold whatever the court decides," spokeswoman Margita Thompson said Tuesday after the state Assembly approved the same-sex marriage measure, 41-35. The Senate had approved it last week.
A state appellate court is considering appeals of a lower court ruling that overturned California laws banning recognition of gay marriages. And opponents of same-sex marriage are trying to qualify initiatives for the 2006 ballot that would amend the state Constitution to ban gay marriages. [......] "

(1) Principles or party?

If the governor follows his own beliefs, he'll sign the bill;
OR let it become law without his signature.
But if he's more concerned about getting support from the fascist wing of California's Republican Party,
he'll veto it.

(2) History or 2006?

If the governor wants future generations to remember him
as forward-looking,
the bill will become law.
But if he's more interested in running
for re-election in 2006.....
????
