Anti-War Movement Needs More Adults, Less Bongos
Todd Gitlin writing for TomPaine.com notes how the Right is "Swift-Boating" Cindy Sheehan and recalls how Anti-War protesters became more and more unpopular as the anti-war movement went mainstream near the close of the Vietnam war. Is there a smarter way for the Anti-war Movement to build momentum for their cause without alienating it?
I liked Ralph Nader's advice that churches toll their bells in memory of the week's war casualties. http://democracyrising.us/content/view/304/151/
What else can be done?
Todd Gitlin's article, "Anti-War America" makes some salient remarks about how more Americans are against the war, but may yet have little idea about how to withdraw from Iraq.
Cindy Sheehan is unequivocal: she believes that every day spent in a war begun by deceit is a tragedy for American soldiers and their families. She still wants Bush to tell her for what noble cause her son had to die.
Who is standing by her? (Especially while Bush and Rove " go down and dirty, as usual," as Gitlin puts it.)
And Todd Gitlin also wonders: how will they stand by her? More puppets, bongos, and syrupy songs?
Cindy Sheehan intercepted the ball; now who can carry it to the goal? Where is the Democratic Party? What happened to the Greens? What has the Republican party become?
As the critical mass gathers around Cindy will it congeal into gridlock-- or worse, fumble the ball? Or will it protect her and give her a real reason to believe that her son did not die in vain?
What happened to the Downing Street Minutes Inquiry?
Where is America's Press?
Do all the facts simply go down the memory hole? Like the fact that Gore won, yes, he won, in 2000 (http://www.consortiumnews.com/2005/082405.html).
Who will now speak the "I" word?-- "Impeach."
