Defend Abortion Rights! We Will Not Go Back!

Defend Abortion Rights!
Thursday, August 11th 7PM
UC Berkeley, 106 Wheeler Hall

There is an immediate urgency to defend women's
rights. We need to build a movement with a strong
response to attacks on our rights--to
be at the abortion clinics to keep them open and safe;
to tell Congress that if they will not filibuster
right-wing nominations to the courts, we will on the
streets; to confront the right wherever they rear
their heads; to
debate and discuss strategy and tactics to move
our struggle forward.

Some of the issues that make this meeting so
important:

**John Roberts' confirmation to the Supreme Court
seems inevitable--many Democrats, including Sen. Diane
Feinstein, have said they will not filibuster, despite
the fact that he has continuously lobbied to overturn
Roe v. Wade.

**Conservatives are forcing Proposition 73, the
Parental Notification Initiative (PNI), which
approximates
an invasive parental consent law, to be on the ballot
in
either November or the early spring (if the Special
Election in November fails) in California.

**This past month, the Crusade for Life has felt
emboldened enough to travel the state of California
harassing women outside abortion clinics. "Walk For
Life" plans to have another march in San Francisco
in January of 2006.

**Nearly 90% of counties in the US have no access to
abortion providers. Access to any contraception at
all is under further attack: the Workplace Religious
Freedom Act, currently under consideration in the
Senate, gives pharmacists the right to refuse to fill
any contraception prescriptions, emergency or
otherwise, if it goes against their faith.

**Women still make $0.75 for every $1.00 a man earns,
and decent, affordable childcare is for too many women
an unattainable dream.

Has to much time gone by since abortions in a decent clinic have been allowed?
Have we forgotten why, abortions in a decent clinic have been allowed?
Have we forgotten the horrors of the back alley abortion?
If the righteous right wants there to be fewer abortions they should consider positive ways of lessening the number of abortions:
Such as funding for homes for unwed mothers.
Food and shelter for these children once they are born.
The same people who are anti abortions are the same people who do not want welfare for unwed mothers.
If the lives of these unwanted children are so important, why not help them once they are born, with providing decent places for them to live and good food, so they can grow up to be healthy and good.
Instead of growing up in slums that lead to crime, that lead to life in prisons.
The same people who want to end abortion are the same people who want the death penalty for these unwanted children once they grow up to be criminals because they have been deprived of the basic food and shelter and security.
A poor women who had been abused, was to poor to support her child, therefore had an abortion, When asked why she said she could never afford to raise the child in a good environment, If she had an abortion the baby would just be gone. If the baby was born and she gave it away she would have to spend the rest of her life wondering is the child was safe and happy or if the child was being abused or in pain, or hungry?
Being pro choice does not mean being anti life. We do not go around telling women who want and can afford their children to have abortions.
We complain about crime.
We complain about overcrowded prisons.
And yet we do not want to help the children of the poor so that they do not grow up in an environment that leads to these situations.

So- you have a problem with men who support choice?
Or *socialist* men who support choice?

I've been to several recent clinic defenses and both social men AND women were present in support. More power to 'em.
