What rights are you talking about? Is it the right to blow things up? Or maybe the right to harrass and intimidate people through violence? Are these really rights?

If these "activists" are involved in any type of violence, then they need to speak up. Nobody has the right to damage other people's property (see Jeff "free" Luers, http://www.indybay.org/news/2005/06/1746266.php)

Nor should anyone intimate others by setting off fires or bombs.

If anyone subpoenaed is "innocent", then speak the truth and be done with it!

bfd - did you read anything about this before spouting off? You are okay with rounding people up based on ideology and interrogating them in secret without benefit of legal counsel? None of these folks have been charged with a crime - and the grand jury process is a violation of several "rights" as laid out in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

What "sb" said!

The issue of resisting or cooperating with a grand jury has little, if anything, to do with whether someone harbors a person that has committed such an act, or even simply supports the idealogy of those that perpetrate property damage, for that matter.

Ben Rosenfeld, a lawyer who is representing the group on behalf of the National Lawyers Guild - describes the issue well in today's SF Chronicle news story.

"If the government really believes that these people have been
harboring Mr. San Diego, then what they're doing is asking them to incriminate themselves in front of the grand jury," he said. "But I don't think they really believe that. This is political. It's a government shakedown."

The power to subpeona is a Judicial branch power, it should not be an Executive branch power; but with the current grand jury system the Executive branch is using the Judicial branch to skirt the constitutional rights of it's citizens.

The grand jury needs to be reformed.
