REAL ID Act: Real Threat to Refugees

Chairman Sensenbrenner has stated on several occasions that he
wants to move his new legislation rapidly, and is pushing to
have it attached to the first "must pass" spending bill of the
109th Congress. Among the potential vehicles are the Iraqi
supplemental spending bill and the expected relief bill for
tsunami victims. If this occurs, it would bypass the normal
legislative process and prevent any real substantive debate and
consideration of these provisions and their devastating impact
on refugees.

House Members need to hear from the many people in this country
who care about refugees. They need to know that you join the
already broad coalition of human rights groups, religious
organizations, civil liberties groups, and a bipartisan group of
Congressional leaders in remaining committed to protecting
vulnerable refugees.

Please write now - this week - and circulate this request widely
to others who care about refugees.
