NOW and Capital City NOW Activists Rally at Supreme Court
to Commemorate 32nd Anniversary of Roe v. Wade

January 21, 2005

On Jan. 22 the National Organization for Women and its Capital City chapter will commemorate the 32nd anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade, which legalized a woman's right to abortion in the United States. NOW activists will gather in front of the Supreme Court to tell the courts, the administration, and Congress, "We won't go back!"

This year the anniversary coincides with the inauguration of reproductive rights opponent George W. Bush, the beginning of a new congressional session where right-wing majorities control both the House and Senate, and an impending open seat on the Supreme Court — where the support for Roe already hangs by a thread.

"Women and girls deserve the ability to make decisions about their reproductive health free of government influence or interference," said NOW President Kim Gandy. "Nobody is better qualified than the woman herself to make such a personal decision about her life, family and future."
What: "We Won't Go Back!" Roe v. Wade Rally
When: Saturday, Jan. 22, 5:00 pm
Where: The Supreme Court
First Street, NE, between Maryland and East Capitol Streets

In April 2004, NOW was a primary organizer of the March for Women's Lives, where over 1 million women, men, girls and boys marched on Washington, D.C., to demonstrate their support for access to the full range of reproductive health services, including: safe and legal abortion, contraception, medically accurate sex education, HIV/AIDS education and prevention, pre-natal and post-natal health care, and more.

On this important day, activists will again pledge their commitment to reproductive freedom and let our leaders know that we will fight every effort to roll back women's rights.
