College Students raise homeless awareness

by Sierra College indymedia
Students lived on campus for 3 days to raise awareness for homeless issues.
For 3 days, 20 Students have lived on campus at Sierra College in order to raise awareness of inadequite housing worldwide, as well as in thier own backyard. Participants came together from Sierra's campus clubs, notably the RoterAct, Social Justice, Relief, and LGBTS groups.

Students asked onlookers to examine the causes of homelessness as well as possible solutions. They also wanted to draw attention to lack of shelter for Placer County's 450+ homeless. (apparently the placer county police take homeless that they pick up, and drop them off in sacramento county, out of the eyes of the upper class placer county residents.)

The students stayed on campus from Monday morning until Wednsday evening, they lived in boxes, primitive structures and communal camping areas. Food was provided by Food Not Bombs.

Donations of Food, Clothing, Blankets, and Hygiene Items were collected. The students will personally be distributing the clothing and blanklets in the local area. Collected Items will also be donated to Food Not Bombs, and a new Placer County roaming shelter.

Students also participated in fund raising by spending their days asking campus-goes to donate spare change. The money that they raised will go towards a home building project with Habitat for Humanity that they will be participating in next spring.
