Fact: PG&E’s Hunters Point power plant emits 600 tons of pollution into Bay Area air including nitrogen oxides, ammonia, particulate matter, and sulfur dioxide. San Francisco doesn’t need this dirty and polluting plant: Even though it was down for repairs 40% of the last three years, there were no brownouts or blackouts.

Fact: The Mirant Potrero Power Plant in Potrero is the largest source of ozone-producing chemicals in San Francisco. The planned retrofit of the plant will also result in the largest ammonia storage facility in the Bay Area—threatening nearby residents with the possibility of deadly toxic releases.

Fact: According to the California Medical Association, each year more than 603,000 asthma attacks are caused by power plant emissions; and 60,000 people die prematurely each year because of exposure to particulate pollution from power plants.

Fact: Southeast San Francisco residents are the hardest hit by power plant pollution. In Bayview Hunters Point, hospitalization rates for congestive heart failure, hypertension and emphysema are more than three times the statewide average and one in six children has asthma.

Fact: The City of San Francisco plans to site 3 new fossil fuel power plants in Potrero without a guarantee that existing dirty and polluting power plants will close.

Fact: Even though San Francisco residents passed a bond measure with 100 million dollars to support development of solar power—most of the money has still not been used to fund clean green energy for the city.

The PG&E Hunters Point Power Plant should be closed immediately, and the Mirant Potrero Power
Plant phased-out as soon as possible without a retrofit that threatens the community with dangerous
ammonia storage. We need a clean green future without noxious fossil fuel pollution.
