toyi-toyi

Symbolically, the toyi-toyi became a cultural weapon in the liberation struggle. It embodied physical and textual imagery of the people's war against oppression. It challenged all political structures which had infringed upon their lives, and created a society in which, to be black meant to be nothing, to have no value. Ultimately, toyi-toying in the 1980s, meant reclaiming the right to occupying public space, and the right to participate in civil society, in a free and democratic environment. Toyi-toyi facilitated the rite of passagge from marginalized rural spaces to the centres of power and politics - the buildings and parks of urban space.
