Does Cal caravan embarrass queers in "fly-over" states?
Coastal cultural imperialism? Heartland cultural cringe?
Fear in the time of Midwest amendments?
Fear in the time of Midwest amendments?
Folks in the Mountain and Central time zones often fear
that bi-coastal sophisticates look down on them,
attitudinally as well as altitudinally,
when we cross the boring "fly-over zone"
between San Francisco and Manhattan.
Do such differences divide even the queer-rights movement?
California's marriage caravan has been travelling overland
from Ess Eff to Dee Cee.
Along the way, some local and state queer groups wish publicity-seeking Californians
would detour AROUND their states.
This sentiment is especially strong where proposed
homophobic constitutional amendments
disgrace November state ballots.
In some of those unlucky states,
local activists have adopted cautious election tactics,
which visiting Californians condescendingly trash.
To be sure, California's the natural leader of queer culture,
and the main engine of hip innovation,
throughout North America and the 12 galaxies,
a fact disputed only by snivelling bumpkins.....
But, even so, does that REALLY qualify us to give orders
to embattled Ohio queers?
-- Cal Chauvinist Too, But Questioning.
