Nobody Is Blocking World Peace, But You

by mark mulligan (anyname [at] peaceworld.freeservers.com)
This poem is a call to arms. Either we progressives rethink our strategy from top to bottom, and retool our non-existent plans, or the war lords will steam-roller us. If you doubt my word, please consult current progressive RESULTS.
Nobody Is Blocking World Peace, But You

I can hear you mutter:
I'm as much for peace as the next guy.
I work as hard for it or not as the next guy.
And I can hear them crow,
Those bad luck buzzards,
“Over my dead body,
Your Big Brother World Peace.”
Gang of cowards!
What are you afraid of,
That you couldn’t fix just right?

World Peace means there would be
NO MORE NATIONS,
NOR STATES,
NOR PATRIOTISM,
NOR US VERSUS THEM.
No more Fuhrers, Presidents,
No more Premiers, Kings.
No more having to choose
The most qualified gang lord.

All our political props and cultural crutches
Would be gone.
We’d find ourselves naked
Before our conscience,
And answer alone for our results.
No more excuses.
Do you have any idea how incredibly
Powerful that would make us,
Fully honoring our conscience?

No more savage brutality,
Justified in public and privately ignored.
No more babies left starved, stupid and sickly,
No more honest folk turned into refugees.
No more burning down the planet.

No more sitting on top of the world,
Farting its resources,
And protesting in total futility
The next inevitable war.
No more making ourselves feel good
About what we should feel ashamed of.
We'd actually have to walk all our fine talk.
Scary indeed, right?

Humanity would be one vast tribe
With no military enemies. One gigantic tribe
With a gigantic council of elders,
With women's circles gossiping endlessly,
With its topics of passion discussed endlessly,
With popular spokespeople
Qualified since childhood,
Chosen by merit and noble generosity,
Addressing the needs of everyone
With justice, mercy and equity,
Drawing honor from that,
But no other advantage.
With its dog soldiers
Trained to shut down war,
With wary judges set to block
Every hate crime.

Every religion sacred,
Every child well cared for,
Every front door unlocked,
Across the whole planet.
One tribe including everyone.
One tribe, very rich,
Cultivating Eden with its surplus wealth,
And leaping for the stars.

Not 200 street gangs
Blowing up the ruins
Of Planet Mogadishu
On a Bad Day.
Not America the Beautiful,
Nothing but the baddest street gang, disgraced
Into electing its most cunning gang lord.
Nor sweet France,
Comely land of my youth,
Bewildered, its ideals misplaced
Its sacred duty forgotten,
Its rally call missed
Lost in that failure.

To maintain WeaponWorld
The way we are doing,
Gotta repeat its weapon myths,
Its clichés and its lies
We've been raised on all our lives.
Gotta think simple.
Gotta think inevitable.
Gotta blame someone else
For what we are responsible for.
Gotta think reductively,
Like we've been taught to, so well.
Gotta reduce to nothing
Our imagination and our conscience,
Just like we've been taught to.

WeaponWorld thrives
On our refusal to think fantastic, with hope,
To call everyone brother and sister,
To mean it on our honor
And act accordingly, without contradiction.

To promote PeaceWorld,
Gotta think multimodal,
Gotta think holistic, heroic and optimistic.
Not fashionable, not popular, not oft-quoted, not brain-dead.

Gotta make up our own peace myths
Just as valid as weapon myths;
Except we wouldn’t have heard them so often,
Repeated over and over since childhood,
The way we’ve heeded
Our weapon myths.
Gotta translate those peace myths into real time
Repeat them, empower them, make them real.

World Peace won't happen
Until you want it to.
It won't happen
Until you overcome your fear of it.
Gotta study peace hard to make it happen.

Nobody is blocking World Peace
In your mind, but you.
Confess your loathing,
Embrace it and turn it around!
Change your mind and change the world.
Make World Peace happen.
Nobody is blocking World Peace, but you.
