Aradia

by Shunka Wakan (shunka_2004 [at] yahoo.com)
The taking of Aradia was a cowardly act, showing total disrespect to David "Gypsy" Chain and his family.
tn_david2.jpg
Let me just take a minute to explain why the taking of Aradia was a cowardly and disrespectful act on behalf of Maxxam Corp./Pacific Lumber Co.
The company and corporation KNEW, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the relationship between Aradia and David "Gypsy" Chain. Gypsy was one of the first people to climb Aradia, back in 1998, and helped to set the original platform and tree-sit there, just before he was killed, on Sept. 17th, 1998. Gypsy was killed when an irate Maxxam/PL logger intentionally fell trees towards a group of non-violent North Coast Earth First! activists; video was taken of the logger threatening to do so less than an hour before Gypsy was killed, and the Humboldt Co. Sheriff's Dept. refused to properly investigate or prosecute the logger/company, calling Gypsy's death a mere "accident."
Unsatisfied with that ruling, Gypsy's family filed a wrongful death civil suit against Maxxam/PL, and won. A "Gypsy Memorial" was established as part of that victory, consisting of (a) the tree that was fallen on Gypsy, plus 100' in all directions, (b) a boulder with an engraved plaque at the base of the mountain, and (c) the Forest Peace Alliance, a roundtable forum for activists to meet with PL management and workers, to discuss ways to avoid violence in the woods, and, hopefully, to resolve conflict with both sides represented and, ideally, respected, at least on a basic human level.
Since Robert Manne took over Pacific Lumber, we have seen a total deterioration of the "Forest Peace Alliance," both in spirit and in practice. NCEF! has been the target of an aggressive "forest defenders as terrorists" campaign, waged by Robert Manne and his buddies in the PR industry. There has been no real effort on the part of Robert Manne to live up to the spirit of the "Forest Peace Alliance."
I put together a 10-page proposal, complete with photos, maps, and even an offer to try to fundraise the money to buy the grove, and have it added to the Gypsy Memorial. I hand-delivered a copy to the Pacific Lumber Co. headquarters in Scotia, and mailed a copy to Maxxam Corp. in Houston. The proposal also included an idea for expanding Grizzly Creek State Park to include Gypsy Mountain, which was hand-delivered to Gray Davis's office, and later sent to Schwarzenegger's office as well. Copies of the proposal were also taken to Wes Chesbro, Patty Berg, and Mike Thompson's office, and there most likely would have been public support to use public funds to acquire the grove.
I never heard a single reply from any of them...
I called Maxxam and PL from the top of Aradia, on many occasions, and talked with Richard Bettis, talked with people at Maxxam, left friendly messages for Robert Manne, sincerely wanting to speak with him to talk about how we could save Aradia in Gypsy's name...nothing...
Soooooo many people occupied the branches of Aradia, over the past 6 years, giving her love, speaking out over the radio airwaves, protecting her, and doing everything they could to try to save her...
I even made a special trip, all the way to Houston, Texas, and spoke to Charles Hurwitz face-to-face, holding a picture of Aradia, explaining to him how much it meant to us, and Aradia's relationship to Gypsy, and how great of a thing it would be if Aradia could be saved and added to the Gypsy Memorial. He even nodded up and down, as if he were hearing me, almost as if he were agreeing with me, that this would be a good thing to do...and now this...
Gypsy's mother also made a special trip to Humboldt County, CA, just weeks before Aradia was killed, to have a special meeting with Robert Manne about saving Aradia.
What more do people have to do to?
I feel that this is a cowardly act, on behalf of Maxxam/PL, because they could not be big enough to admit that David Chain gave his life for these forests, and should be honored and respected. Because if they admit that about David, then they have to admit it about the rest of us, and that's the last thing they want to do. Cutting Aradia was also an act of blatant disrespect towards David Chain and his family, who made it very clear to Maxxam/PL that they wanted Aradia to be saved in his honor.
And now Aradia is dead...I'm sure you, Maxxam/PL, feel very accomplished now, as do you, Eric Schatz and Co. I can tell you that I feel disgusted to even think of you. Such a blatant act of greed, cowardice, and disrespect will only come back to haunt you a trillion fold. How do you like those numbers?
We still have a lot of love in our hearts, and your acts of greed will only serve to expose your true nature.
And we can't leave the government out of this one, either, who "protects" marbled murrelet habitat from March to September, and then allows the corporations to level these very same areas from September to March. What a repulsive display of futility.
Eric Schatz has a criminal history of domestic violence. He should not be allowed to touch ANYONE in a forceful and nonconsensual manner. The fact that our local, state, and federal government ALLOWS this man to physically, verbally, and sexually assault members of the public (he's done all of the above in the tree-tops alone), so that Maxxam/PL can destroy endangered species habitat, is a CRIME.
Aradia will live forever in the hearts and minds of the people who loved her, and in the spirit world. Aradia's legend will live on in video, pictures, songs, poems, stories, and a spirit you cannot erase.
What you, Maxxam/PL/Eric Schatz, have done to your own souls, I cannot imagine, and I feel sorry for you...barely...
What you get is what you will deserve, and, if it comes from NCEF!, it will be non-violent, yet it will not be pleasant. What you get on the spirit level...well, I can't make any promises about that, yet I can assure you...it's not going to be fun for you.
Just know that you have really stepped in it, once again, and have shown nothing but cowardice and disrespect, after we did everything we could do to respectfully ask you to save Aradia and add it to the Gypsy Memorial.
I hope you realize how much sadness you have created, and how much that tree meant to so many people, far and wide. Does it make you happy to cause such sadness?
Examine your soul if the true answer is "yes," and ask yourself why you think it's a game to trample on people's feelings and destroy beauty.
We are grieving, and it's only making us stronger...we will continue to resist corporate greed, and will continue to educate, inspire, activate, and revolutionize people, so that your ship, Corporate America, will sink, which it will, it's just a matter of time...
Earth First! We Love You Aradia! FLAN!
No Compromise in Defense of Mother Earth!
Action is the Antidote for Despair!
"You're served!"

With Love, Light, and Re-evolution,

Shunka,
Maybe your proposal to save the tree had no merit to it. If so many people rejected your idea, perhaps it was a poor idea with little thought put into it. Except, course to save the tree fort for yourself... I know, it's not for you because ownership doesn't exist in your eyes. As far as statement of “taking of Aradia was a cowardly act, showing total disrespect to David "Gypsy" Chain and his family” you seem to lack one basic understanding, timber companies cut trees down! You see, first you have to cut the tree down in order to get it to the mill so that you can make lumber for building houses, offices, trees forts, or platforms. It shouldn’t be a surprise to you that the tree was logged especially since it was part of a legal Timber Harvest Plan.
Oh and just out of curiosity have you ever seen a spotted owl or murlett while up in the trees. If so you and your buddies maybe in federal violation of harassing the little critters and scaring them away from there home or by attracting corvidea, which, judging by the amount of debris you leave laying around I am sure you do.
I do look forward to hearing back from you; I’ll eagerly wait while you think up more bullshit.
by Spotty the owl
Bongo drumming drives away murrelets and owls and legally constitutes harrassment of endangered species. When they go because of bongo drumming, it becomes legal to harvest. DOH!

After reading what Shunka wrote and the coments,I fear to believe the world has gone crazy. There are only less than 1%of old growth redwood left in the world, and activists are only sitting in 7-10 trees! Is it too much to spare these few ancient tress from office furniture and docks. These magical, powerful, beautiful trees deserve some respect. Be grateful Some evolved folks recognize what is happening and can disassociate themselves from the greed and take action. We need this passion to be nurtured in all walks of life, if we hope to progress as a species. Stop living in oblivion.!
As for the marbled murrelets and owls,3 hippies in trees are not nearly as much a distraction as the loss of their habitat. And Bongos are no louder than cars, trucks ,helicopters, chainsaws, laughter and life happening in general.I'm sure the birds can adapt,as long as they're not dead or homeless. And the many pictures and times I have visited the forest,I see no debris of the tree sits. People are dying trying to protect OUR forests, not their forests.Show some gratitude!

And thus we come full circle. The tree pirates have failed again. It is a shame Mr. Wilson that nothing you set your mind to ever materializes. Perhaps the fault lay in the mind rather than the intensity of effort. I appreciate your lack of a learning curve. It makes logging easier, for those so inclined.
Does this mean no record label? What a shame.

Mr. Bettis, You owe me a pirate flag.

hey there smerkin merkin...sounds like your jerkin' old charles Hurl-witz off. as for the logging of old growth for corporate greed, all i can say is "i'd gladly share your point of view, but i dont think my head will go that far up my ass". if a simple minded dolt like yourself has'nt taken the opportunity to check out sustainable forestry, or the economic impact PL has had on small land owners...let you in on a secret here- i'm a private land owner and logger...then back the fuck off my good friend shunka. i cut trees...i climb trees...and i believe saving old growth redwood is a worthy enough cause to hike food to defenders in the old growth. you might want to check out the "legality" clause you offered up, because the last I checked, PL is far from the legal harvest plan. However, with all the oldgrowth the cut and sell, they surely can afford the fine and a quick bribe to a member of the legislature or two. so how is a logger friends with the earth firster? Many reasons...one is it cost me an arm and a leg to get my harvest plan, two gypo logging outfits dont want much to do with my trees when they know they will get big bucks for helping maxxam rape the forest, and three...when is the last time you hooked a salmon in the eel river? I'm convinced you have balls enough to write...i'm also convinced you need to spit them out because they are probably not yours. c'mon
To further display Maxxam/PL's total disrespect for all life, even their own, it turns out that one/some of their employees also desecrated the Gypsy Memorial shrine, near the tree that was fallen on Gypsy.
This shrine is within the 100 ft. protection buffer around the tree that was fallen on Gypsy, and is not supposed to be disturbed by Maxxam/PL. I found the shrine in shambles, with all the various stones and memorabelia strewn across the trail, and it was obvious that a human had been there tampering with it, disrespecting Gypsy even further, and showing their total lack of decency, which seems to run throughout the company and corporation. Just look at the posts from the obvious Maxxam/PL lackeys, and you'll see what I mean.
I fixed the memorial shrine, and it was a good experience to rebuild that altar once again. Makes the spirit stronger...
FYI...I was part of the Luna ground support team, and we did put our minds to that, and saving Luna did materialize.
Seems that John Campbell, for all of his misdeeds, at least had the common sense to realize that saving Luna would be better for the company than extracting Julia and cutting Luna. And Luna didn't even have a Maxxam/PL murder attached to it, the way Aradia does...you really enjoy stepping in it, don't you, Robert Manne?
I will not take the blame for your greed and disrespect for all life, human and otherwise. We did everything we could to save you from the karma that you've acquired from cutting Aradia and disrespecting Gypsy and his family.
And just a few days after you cut Aradia, you got slammed for $6 million for your fraudulent business conduct...karma comes around fast, doesn't it...and that's just the beginning of the price that you will pay for your illegal and unscrupulous activities! You, and the taxpayers, thanks to you, will have to foot the bill, to EPIC and the Steelworkers! Ouch, huh?
Believe me, if the Gypsy case is still open, I would be thrilled to talk about how Maxxam/PL killed David "Gypsy" Chain, and how the Humboldt Co. Sheriff's Dept. went along with Maxxam/PL's lies and called it an "accident."
No one has ever asked, not even the liberal Humboldt Co. D.A. Paul Gallegos, who opened and shut the case, without a peep, when he was elected to office, after promising to re-open the investigation if he were elected. No one seems to be brave enough to re-open the investigation, because, if they did, they would find a long trail of lies and witness coercion on behalf of Maxxam/PL and the Humboldt Co. Sheriff's Dept., including the obviously slanted questioning done by homicide detective Juan Freeman.

Maxxam/PL did offer to save Aradia and the Jerry tree in Freshwater once...if we would agree to stop protesting entirely...such a rediculous offer was only intended to kill the Earth First! movement, and was an impossible request on behalf of Maxxam/PL. As if Remedy and I had the power to stop all protesting on Maxxam/PL land, and/or as if throwing the people a couple bones would satisfy our need to see an end to the destructive practice of clearcutting (legal or not), the use of herbicides, cutting on steep and unstable slopes, and the destruction of all the other remaining old growth trees.
It was more of an insult that anything, and, even though Rich Bettis, the PL land manager, called me over for a special meeting with Remedy one day, when he initially made the proposal, I was never contacted after that, never sent a copy of the proposal, and was never included in that proposal in any way.
We could have pulled everything, including ourselves, off of Aradia and Gypsy Mountain, if a reasonable agreement had been made...instead, it was just silence, and then the destruction of an ancient and beautiful being.
And now you are paying the price, and will continue to do so for a long time to come....
Enjoy the swirling spin as your company goes down the tubes, and remember who's on the other end, flushing you down.
You are the spin doctors, aren't you?
Mary Bullwinkle was a radio disc jockey before she was your PR mouthpiece, before you fired her without warning...you must really like the spin, and how typically corporate of you to fire people without warning, after years of lying/working for you.
And for anyone who is confused about us having a recording studio/label...we've never had a studio, we use a local recording studio to make our activist song CDs, and it's not hard to print "FLAN Records" on a CD that you make yourself. So, for anyone who's wondering, we don't have our own recording studio, and FLAN Records lives!
So, Maxxam/PL/Eric Schatz, get ready for the bad karma that's coming your way from killing Gypsy and Aradia, for desecrating his shrine, for your years of lies and environmental devastation, and from all the spirits that are very upset with you, thanks to your own disrecpect for all life.

Saving Aradia would have saved you a world of trouble....
by little old lady
And for anyone who is confused about us having a recording studio/label...we've never had a studio, we use a local recording studio to make our activist song CDs,

yes now you say "EF" doesn't own the recording studio
but it was purchised with EF donation money (who owns title to this property?) is it you shunka? and what about the office buildings (2 now) and why the corperate movement of earthfirst? what is the deal?
by who needs them///////
paying $50 grand for a tree, doesn't constitute saving it in my mind! what other trees have the sitters saved? you are disrespecting EPIC, by saying that their lawsuit was only karma coming back at P.L., there was a lot of hard legal work put into that lawsuit! I say, get out of the forest, and bring your battle to the offices of P.L., and the government. after all, the only ones who see you in the woods, are the underpaid timber workers, who don't have a say in the matter at all. so stop sucking all the money for your tree-forts, and create something that stops this company!
by Smerkin Merkin
Kirby bay,
You sure do have an obsession with jerking off others and balls in mouths, probably from too many gay porn flicks. As for “logging of old growth for corporate greed” I never once wrote about my point of view on that matter so perhaps your head is even further up your ass than you had thought.
Enough of the back and forth insults, congratulations of being a logger, which if indeed you are, why are you looking for gypo logging outfits? No LTO licenses I would guess, which would more likely just make you a faller. Nevertheless, maybe you should have your forester help you with your logging issues, they could get multiple loggers together so that they could bid on you legal harvest plan base on volume, distance to mills, yarding methods, and quality of wood, of course you probably know all this. Yet you still want to blame PL from all your problems even though they have what appears to be a good business relationship between logging outfits and themselves to ensure the survival of both their businesses. You should look into a log sharing proposal where your logs go to PL if they get the logging done for you.
As for the salmon, last winter, multiple times. But the last of the season one was on a drift from the confluence down to High Rock. Sounds like you need a guide, or just some buddies with boats.
by Lymantria Dispar
Alright Wilson here's the deal. When Chain's Family SETTLED their lawsuit you were pissed. Now you claim it as a victory.
Secondly you can drop the threat laden tone in your messages. You have not caused any significant harm to PL since you came here from Missouri, or what ever no tree (sure as hell no old growth) state you are from, so don't waste your words. No one is scared. As for Karma, So what if Houston has to pay legal fees. No one in Scotia is affected. The only one having a bad Karmic week so far is you.

And in regards to the "Shrine" I suppose you are the opnly one given the right to take things off the hill, Like the Gaia statue Nathan's sister left up there. Your consistant moral superiority complex is both judgemental and juvanile. Neither are traits of the enlightened.

And to the "logger" who can't get anyone to cut their timber, Must suck to have smaller timber than PL.

smerkin merkin', your opinions are transparent as your pseudo-inteligence. while you claim to not offered opinion on logging old growth for corporate greed, your absolute whimsical nature of putting a 600 year old tree to the mill when so many people have gone to such lengths (me included) to protect it gives clue that your either trying deliberately to raise the feathers of friends (murrlet pun intended), or that your smoke screen wasnt thick enough to bamboozle even the lowly logger. I have my LTO, but what is a two day class in sacremento even when its conducted by Bill Schultz himself? Its a common sence reitteration of "you'll get in trouble if your screw up the WLPZ", "have the forester and harvest plan info readily available and darn near memorized if your inspected...fire box soap box ad nauseum", and the very basics of filing THP, TMP, conversion, and firewood/christmas tree paperwork. I do not like to see gypo logging outfits. I dont look for them, but as far as my own property being logged, we were in contact with Leonardo logging to do our yarder work, and he wanted $210.00 a thousand to the mill. The enonomic impact of PL only starts to become apparent at this point. Lets drag some old politics in here and take time to remember the millions in kickbacks the Murphy's received to not make too much of a fuss during the hostile take over. With millions of dollars to piss into the wind, fines from reckless logging are easily paid, or just laughed at as expensive lawyers get them off the hook. As a private land owner, let me tell you how this impacts me directly. PL's (and other corporate log giants of the past i.e. Simpson) roughshod treatment of the forest and logging rules inspires lawyers for the activists to lead us by the nose to new logging regulations, which now impact both large timber holders, and to an ever so much greater extent, the small land owner. Some examples of this are in 1980-83, my family and I planted 7000 trees to start stabilizing the ground in high erosion areas of our property from where it had never been properly replanted from the logging in the 1950's by previous owners. Some of these trees are close to where we built our house, and somewhate close to a WLPZ. When we first had our forester come up, logging regulation dictated that the WLPZ boundary would be at 75'. I cut our 3 acre conversion accordingly, to include 4 sitka spruce trees that we had planted and were all less than 12" in diameter and less than 30' tall. You'd think this would be o.k. in three different ways, (1) the trees were out of the WLPZ at that time, (2) the trees were well within the conversion plan, (3) the trees were definately within 150' of the house or in our "defencible zone" as suggested by CDF. I cut the four trees. One month later, stae ordinance is passed to up the WLPZ distance to 100'. The county comes to inspect our conversion, and fines us $600.00 bucks for our offence. We pay it, because we certainly can afford to fight it and still have to pay it. Here's the irony, a couple months later, The Governator gets elected into office, and repeals the forestry rules back to 2002 guidlines. Ask me if the county has refunded my $600.00 now that the WLPZ is back to 75'? To wrap this up, this diectly correlates financial impact to a private land owner the county knows is going to pay the fine or be subject to losing all their investment in property, and knows they have a good chance of the land owner not being able to afford the time or lawyers fees to fight. Financial impact to land owners does not stop there by any means. Decreased property values from "lush views" of clear cut forest, or direct impact of erosion from these clearcuts to bordering properties are overwhelmingly noted in this county. On a different note, we now know my assertation of being a logger is genuine, and i will bolster this with informing you that I am the faller, climber, choker setter, landing chaser...everything except the truck driver. Of course, i would never send my logs to PL for good reason. By reason of "what i've heard through the grapevine" i.e. my neighbors that have been logged by PL, I fear that their scalers would be giving the company a better shake than the log owner. I use my real name in my posts because i dont live in a cloud of fear of being discovered as a fraud. What is a smerkin merkin anyhow? If I do start watching gay porn will Smerkin Merkin be one of the stars? As for your salmon off of high rock, i hope you had the sense to milk the eggs and sperm from the fish you took. As for me and my "buddies with boats" we have long since upgraded from the drift to a 38' ocean worthy vessel just to lessen the impact on the salmon in the river. Its kind of like hide and seek, and if they make the river, then the salmon have made it to base. And thanks for rewarding the squaw fish with a little less competition in the food chain there big guy...
by Smerkin Merkin
Mr. Bay,
How wonderful for you that you chose to use your real name, but unless you failed to notice I am no the only one who chooses to use an alias. Even your “good friend shunka” (aka Jason Wilson) refuses to use his true name. Perhaps, as you so eloquently put it, he too lives “in a cloud of fear of being discovered as a fraud.” Or maybe everybody on this entire website is living in that fear, Remedy (Jen Card), moth, even the little old lady. Or it maybe that some of us don’t want our names available to any jackass out surfing the web.
Moving on I find your violation a little hard to believe since once a permit, conversions/NTMP/THP, is signed the permit adheres to the rules that were in place once the permit was approved. So you either got tricked into paying a fee you shouldn’t have or you did in fact cut to close to the watercourse and deserved the fine. Of course I find it rather ironic that your fine was 600 bucks which just happens to be the fee for a conversion.
Speaking of conversions, you don’t hold anything back when attacking PL and their cutting of trees yet you seem to find it ok to do a land conversion. PL cuts and grows trees where it appears that you just convert land out of TPZ and into some other form of land management other than growing trees. Of course it is only three acres out of your 160 acre parcel, half of which by looking at maps appears to be in either prairie or open grassland. Maybe that is why the logging costs where going to be so high. Even though Ferndale is close to multiple mills, Leonardo Logging probably wasn’t too excited about bringing their equipment out to log 3 acres of shitty Sitka spruce and whatever other open grown trees you logged on those 3 acres (plus 4 trees illegally taken out of the WLPZ). Of course, even though your land is close to mills, you didn’t want to sell it to PL so right there your costs are going to go up more due just too hauling distances. Oh and your concerns about scaling, maybe instead of listening to the “grapevine” you should take the time to learn how the log scaling is done on the west coast and perhaps you would understand how the scaling can, and in some case can’t help the mills.
One last thing, don’t try to sound all high and mighty because you only fish out of the ocean, your still catching and killing a fish that will no longer even have a chance to make it to the river let alone spawn, so don’t try to preach your lessening any impact. Plus, you being a local of those northern rivers should know that the Eel is catch and release, so to answer your question no I didn’t milk the eggs. So it seems to me that you are the one who is supporting the squawfish.
Oh yeah, say hi to Nancy.
by Shunka Wakan (shunka_2004 [at] yahoo.com)
The main point of all this is that Maxxam/PL disrespected David "Gypsy" Chain and his family when they cut Aradia down.
We had done just about everything that we could, non-violently, to save Aradia as an addition to the Gypsy Memorial, and nothing could convince Maxxam/PL to honor Gypsy's life, death, and family; they gave in to their lower selves, and have dishonored themselves.
We had a 10-page proposal to buy the area, made a trip to Houston to talk with Hurwitz face-to-face about saving Aradia in Gypsy's name, Gypsy's mother came all the way from Texas, just weeks before Aradia was cut, to respectfully ask that the illegitimate climbers not be used and that Aradia be saved, we had people from Sanctuary Forests talking with PL president and CEO Robert Manne about saving Aradia, and nothing was enough for these greedy guys.
We delivered the proposal to many local representatives, as well as governors Davis and Schwarzenegger, with no reply.
The fact that Aradia was cut down shows a complete failure, on the government's part, to effectively protect endangered species habitat (which Aradia was), and a complete lack of respect and tact, on the part of Maxxam/PL.
By disrespecting Gypsy and his family, Maxxam/PL has dishonored themselves, and they will be exposed for it...every action has an equal and opposite reaction, so the joy that Maxxam/PL feels from their hollow victory on Gypsy Mountain will be matched by the guilt and dishonor that they will experience when their dirty deeds are exposed to the world, once again.
The public will have to foot the bill for part of that $6 million ruling against Maxxam/PL, so the public is going to be even more enraged at the illegal activities of Maxxam/PL and the so-called regulatory agencies who allowed such a fatally flawed so-called "sustained yield plan" to go through.
The fun is over now, and all you have left is the sick satisfaction that you get from killing beautiful beings.
by Holy Moly
Aradia is still alive only now it will be a ring of sprouts with the same genetic code, growing around the stump. Which over time, will grow to be a "fariy circle " of Aradias.
by make it right.......
You say the government failed, but i say you failed! It is hard to change the government, unless you have a majority of the people beside you in your cause. Why would the govenor be interested in your cause, if only a handful of people are trying to get him to notice, get out of the forest, and start talking to people, until you have a large presence, than you can insist on the government changing. Or you can keep alienating the people, who actually want to help you, but only hear how you need money to climb a tree!
by Shunka Wakan (shunka_2004 [at] yahoo.com)
I say the government failed, and is failing, to protect these old growth forests and endangered species habitat, for many reasons.
There was a deal going through the California state government at the time, a deal between Maxxam/PL and the state parks system, to expand Grizzly Creek State Park by buying up cut-over PL land. I put together a proposal to include Gypsy Mountain in the expansion, and Gov. Gray Davis was all over that deal at the time.
That's why we traveled all the way to Sacramento to hand-deliver a copy of the proposal, 10 pages with color photos and maps, to the governor's office in person.
Not even so much as a call-back, form letter, nor e-mail...
I also hand-delivered copies of the proposal to the offices of Patty Berg, Wes Chesbro, and Mike Thompson, right here in Humboldt County, CA, and never heard a single word back from any of them, except for Wes Chesbro's office, who called me to tell me that the proposal had been forwarded to Wes.
I also hand-delivered a copy to the Humboldt Co. Board of Supervisors, at one of their public meetings, and explained the situation to them, and they made no reply.
Why would they be interested in helping?
Because the function of any government should be to help the people and help resolve conflicts.
Because areas such as these are endangered species habitat, and are currently only protected for 6 months out of the year, which means nothing when the corporations can come in and clearcut those very same areas during the other 6 months of the year.
Because a person had his life taken from him while engaging in non-violent civil disobedience to protect the forest, which is as American as apple pie, like it or not.
Because a lot of people knew about Aradia and support saving the last remaining old growth redwood trees left on Earth, and it could have made it through the state government, with a little cooperation from our representatives.
The state park people I spoke with were in support of expanding the park to include Aradia and Gypsy Mountain...I have a feeling that the wall was Maxxam/PL.
Even though Gypsy's mother made a special trip, all the way from Texas, to meet with Robert Manne, President and CEO of Pacific Lumber Co. in Scotia, CA, just weeks before Aradia was cut, Manne gave the orders to directly disrespect her wishes by using the illegitimate and illegal extractors (Eric Schatz and Co.) and destroying the grove that should have been protected as endangered species habitat and a memorial to David "Gypsy" Chain.
Not a peep from the Governator Schwarzenegger, either, by the way, so the "environmental Republican" didn't lift a finger to try to help end this conflict peaceably and environmentally, either...no big surprise there, either, since he appointed a Maxxam/PL mouthpiece to the CA EPA as soon as he got into office. I sent him a copy of the proposal, and a nice video, too, as soon as he got into office...our contact info was in the proposal, and, as I said, not one phone call, e-mail, form letter, fax...nothing...
So the taking of the Aradia grove represents not only Maxxam/PL's blatant disrespect and disregard of Gypsy's life, death, and family, it also represents the failure of the local, state, and federal government to effectively protect endangered species habitat and respond to the wishes of the people.
Instead, the government enables the abusive behavior of the corporations and the police towards the Earth and the people, while the victims get blamed for the abuse, by the abusers.
Classic cycles of abuse that need to be broken...
It's up to us to break these cycles of abuse, and they will be broken, in time...Earth First!

hello there smerkin merkin. you seem to take a lot of liberty attaching my 3 acre conversion permit, which i will use my own mill to make wood for my family's house, to the clearcut of old growth redwood practices of PL. and i'm sure leonardo is looking for a better deal than a little "shitty" spruce. you can tell by his choice of realtors..Debi August. you know any fucking thing about wood? i find spruce a fine specimen. on the brinell hardness scale it out performs any other connifer. its fiberous nature is why it was used extensively in early airplane props, just try to delaminate it. you are really some brassy little piece of shit arn't you? just curious, did the columbia helicopter over my ridge the other day do your bidding? as for high and mighty? you seem to gloat on revealing true names to forest alias' while still hiding behind a false name. hide what you will, but hiding is the first evidence i will sight that you too are on the wrong side of right and just as eager to lie and distort the light of truth as the corporate juggernauts that pull your pleasant little gay bashing redneck strings. for disclosing my personal property location and mentioning my mother, she says not only "hi" back, but will also note that if you have in any way been connected to our logging, your employment will no longer be considered desirable. care to fess up? come on out of that closet big logging manly man. let us know your not too chicken to back an opinion with who's opinion it is. as far as the county and the fine...what can i say? my boss couldn't afford to fight the citation, even when clearly in the right.

So the government is failing! When you say you talked to the government, it is always just you. Try talking to them and show them all the signitures, of all the common folk on your side! The government isn't going to listen to some dirty hippie, that crawled out of the forest. Take some of that law-suit money you won, and clean your-self up, or are you going to build more tree-forts with it? The more people you have registared on your side, makes the government take notice. Get out of the forest, where no one hears you, empower yourself with that gift for gab, that you say you have!

The government and politicians answer to the corporations, and the corporations answer to no one...that's the problem we face, and the situation at hand.
That's why we call it "Corporate America."
Maxxam/PL disrespected Gypsy's life, death, and family by cutting Aradia, and the government completely failed, once again, to protect endangered species habitat and to respond to a legitimate, bound proposal, complete with color photos and maps, and representing the wishes of many people in Humboldt County, as well as Gypsy's family in Texas.
Conforming to Corporate America will not save the forest.
We need people on all fronts, and those numbers are growing...Earth First!

The government is there for you Shunka. They just don't agree that it is o.k. for you to tresspass on corporate lands. You have no credentials that they are interested in, so they won't listen to you. If they disd., your dead friend, than I think that they don't realize that they did this. So, take them to court, isn't that what you did, when they illegally strip-searched you? I know you won that battle and are expecting a $35,000 settlement, in December. So why doesn't it get though that brain of yours, that legal action is the way to go. You didn't have to be a lawyer to get your recent settlement victory(which you fail to talk about)! So stop wasting all the donations you have, and use them for something that will accomplish more than a boast to your tree fort life-style!

Mr. Wilson,
In order to fail, one must make an attempt. The government made no attempt to save the tree, and thus they did not fail, they just chose not to protect it. You made it your life's goal to save that tree. But it was cut. By definition, you failed. You failed because of your inablitlity to deal rationally with a system you both misundersatnd and fear. Cherney and Bari understood the system, and the succeeded in protection 7000 acres. Julia Hill understood the system and she protected her tree. In order to be an effectiuve activist you must be able to utilize and manipulate the power structure to achieve your ends. You lack the capacity to accomplish such a task, and were unable to convince anyone with such capacity (Cherney could have bought it) to assist you. Thus you failed in your attempt to save the tree. No one is saying that you did not try. It is just that your attempts, and the years of struggles were in the end worthless to keep the tree standing. You can point your finger anywhere you want, but these facts are undeniable.
In 2001 I flagged the harvest boundary around the harvest unit in which Aradia was located. It was a very nice looking tree, apart from the tattered blue tarps still attached. Now it is a large mass of beautiful lumber, and life continues. You must learn not to dwell on this issue. Perhaps you could obtain a house plant and dedicate you life to saving it. Don't get to attached though. Your track record with saving plants is not good.
