Day 8, Tuesday - May 18, last night was the last candlelight vigil that the fasters will be at in Oakland for a while, as they are packing their bags and leaving for Sacramento tomorrow afternoon.

Tomorrow, Wednesday - May 19th, the fasters and Fast 4 Education organizers and community supporters will be having a press conference at noon at Frank Ogawa Plaza, and then they will begin their journey to the Capital.

More details on the location in Sacramento and coming events will be posted soon. The following are pictures from what turned out to be an amazing last night in Oakland, and we ended the night by singing a song that some youth lead us in. I remember a few words rather distinctly, as it was a call and response - "From coast to coast, From Coast to Coast, Cali's schools suck the most, Cali's schools suck the most."
(the picture above is of one of the fasters picketing in a rally with Claremont workers and community supporters, who work with Hotel Employee and Restaurant Employee Union(HERE) local 2850...Cesar Vive!! He kind of passed out for a while after this and then got his energy back a little from the crowd during the vigil.)

Karina mentioned in passing that she had to go to the hospital today to get rehydrated with an iv, but she seems like she is in relatively good health and spirits for being on her 8th day of fasting; and it doesn't look like her or any of the other fasters are planning on backing down anytime soon.

Recycling workers were at City Hall tonight trying to urge the city coucil to do the right thing and protect their good paying union jobs, instead of laying them off by contracting with a large corporate chain called Waste Management. Many of the workers came out and joined the Fast 4 Education vigil for a while and talked to organizers and other people at the vigil to express support.
