2004 Bay Area NGO-Media Dialogue:

Bringing Home ‘Bad News’: Increasing Awareness in the US of
Conflict, Violence and Disaster Abroad

New College Theater, 777 Valencia St., San Francisco

Panelists include:

David Michaelis, Director of Current Affairs, WorldLink TV
Andrew Ross, Executive Foreign-National Editor, San Francisco Chronicle
Fairuz Taqi-Eddin, Media and Event Coordinator, CARE
Mary Ann Tenuto Sanchez, Founding Member, Chiapas Support Committee
Jeff Perlstein, Executive Director, Media Alliance (Moderator)
This dialogue features a panel of NGO staff and Bay Area journalists as they discuss international crises and the range of their coverage and awareness in the US. Why do some foreign stories of crises get covered while others seem to be overlooked in the US? How can NGO and media professionals accurately convey at home common hazards experienced abroad? How can they succeed in their international work while protecting themselves in politically sensitive or violent environments? These are only a sample of topics that may be discussed, and the audience is invited to ask questions afterward.

Alix Olson at New College!

New College Cultural Center, 777 Valencia St., SF

"Alix Olson is a brilliant performer, an ingenious poet, a serious thinker, a funny person. She brought me to my feet." — Howard Zinn

Alix Olson is a nationally touring folk poet and progressive queer artist-activist whose quick wit, fearless poetry, and charismatic presence sells out venues across the country. One part peace vigil, one part protest rally, and one part joyful raucous concert, Alix ignites audiences everywhere she performs.

Alix's innumerable stage, broadcast, radio and print appearances include, most recently, headlining HBO's "Def Poetry Jam" (Russell Simmons), and an inclusion in Utne Magazine's InRadio compilation. Utne's website calls Alix "...the spoken word diva everyone's talking about." Alix has graced the cover of Ms. Magazine, who called Alix a "road-poet-on-a-mission," and her work has been featured in Girlfriends Magazine, The Advocate, Lesbian Review of Books, and on the cover of Lambda Book Report. A recent interview with Alix for The Progressive (see http://www.alixolson.com ) calls her a "Word Warrior" and gives a comprehensive peek into just what makes Alix's work so compelling. She has appeared on Oxygen television, CNN, In the Life, and WXPN's World Cafe with David Dye, as well as local radio stations around the country.

In June 2003, Alix (along with Margaret Cho and Nobuko Oyabu) received the "Visionary Award" from the DC Rape Crisis Center for her "exceptional commitment to the promotion of social justice." Past honorees include Gloria Steinem, Tori Amos, Patricia Ireland and Sarah Jones.

Admission is $10 - A Benefit for SF Bay Indymedia!
Co-sponsored by New College Center for Education and Social Action

Media Quotes:

The Progressive called Alix "an electrifying performer who seduces the audience with wit and energy, spinning tales of life on the road between her fiery poems. A sharpshooter with theatrical flair, Olson oozes both love and rage."

"An advocate for grassroots truth." - Utne Magazine

March for Women's Lives Report Back

New College Cultural Center, 766 Valencia Street, San Francisco

Join journalist Rose Aguilar for a report back and video footage from the March,
along with a panel discussion about reproductive rights.

Panelists include:

Deborah Glenn-Rogers, President, San Francisco National Organization for Women
Joan Flores, Development Coordinator, ACCESS/Women’s Health Rights Coalition
Lydia Pace, Coordinator, UCSF chapter of Medical Students for Choice
Erika Jackson, President, San Jose State chapter of the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance

The March for Women’s Lives drew the largest crowd the women’s movement has ever seen. Organizers said 1.15 million people -- from across the United States and 57 countries -- packed Washington DC’s National Mall. The diverse group, including Catholics for Choice and Republicans for Choice, came together in solidarity to challenge the Bush administration’s assault on women’s rights.

How did the media cover the event?
Did organizers accomplish their goal of reaching out to women of color?
Who marched?
What’s the state of reproductive rights in California and across the nation?
How do women’s rights groups plan to turn over a million marchers into voters?
Where do we go from here?

"We Are Everywhere is the first book to truly capture and embody the exuberant creativity and radical intellect of the protest movements."
— Naomi Klein

Jennifer Whitney and Andrew Stern, two of the books producers on a national tour, present a multimedia performance. David Martinez, journalist and filmmaker, sent dispatches from Iraq to the SF Bay Guardian and Democracy Now!. Just returned from Fallujah, Iraq, where he worked with injured civilians, was fired on by US Marines and captured (and released) by Iraqi resistance. http://vitw.us/weblog/archives/cat_david_martinez.html
