"The Cucumber Incident"
LA filmmakers Fireant Films, Bonita Makuch and Melodie Calvert created a feature length documentary piece about what came to be known as "The Cucumber Incident", where three women become vigilantes after the legal system abandons them.

"The Cucumber Incident" chronicles a family's struggle for justice after learning that their 5-year-old girl is being sexually molested by a family member. Increasingly frustrated by the inaction of Children's Services, the child's grandmother, Mary Franks intervenes. Mary is joined by her sister-in-law and daughters in an odd and impassioned act of retribution that results in charges of rape and kidnapping against this matriarchal posse. Unintended consequences abound as the family is cast into a dizzying maze of media sensationalism and legal machination. In poignant and often painful detail, this story reveals a schism between the codified laws of society and the primal instinct to protect our children by any means necessary. Issues of class, race and gender are explored in a tragic statement about the systems that run our world. Bonita Makuch, the filmmaker, is planning on coming up from LA for this special screening, so please come out and support!
