Survival Trumps Marriage for Local Queer Youth
Opponents and advocates of gay and lesbian marriage have been mobilizing in the past weeks, following the Massachusetts Supreme Court ruling that only marriage, not civil union, would satisfy its initial decision. While all mainstream attention continues to focus on the issue of gay marriage, a recent report issued in Washington, D.C. puts day-to-day survival as the number one priority for youth of color who are transgender, bisexual, lesbian, gay, or queer. Darby Hickey of the D.C. Radio Coop reports on the issues that many in the community say deserve as much attention as the battle for marriage equality.
Washington D.C. is the home of dozens of national groups on both sides of the battle over gay and lesbian marriage, and, of course, home to the White House and Copngress where the issue is being hotly debated. But D.C. is also home to a community of transgender, bisexual, lesbian and gay people, most of whom are low income and people of color. A recent survey by local organizations found that the priorities of those on Capitol Hill are out of sync with the priorities of the people who live in the neighborhoods within its sight.
