Some of the most dangerous provisions include allowing for indefinite detention of non-citizens, removing judicial review from the expanded use of wiretapping, secret searches, and access to sensitive private records like student records, allowing the government to read emails and track the web browsing of virtually anyone, and expanding the definition of the word terrorism to include almost ANY act of protest against the government. President Bush will almost certainly sign these new provisions into law this week. Every person in this country, and especially here at UC Berkeley, the national heart of open discussion, debate, and dissent, needs to know about this legislation and how it will affect them. To that end, the Berkeley ACLU is hosting a teach-in on this federal legislation on Oct 25. Speakers at the teach-in will discuss exactly what the legislation says and what that will mean for all of us. There will also be speakers from the UC Berkeley administration to discuss issues specifically related to students, such as governmental access to student records. After the speakers speak, there will be a question and answer period open for questions from the audience. This legislation affects YOU!
