Dorothy Ehrlich - Executive Director, American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California (ACLUNC)
Robert Rubin - Legal Director, Lawyers Committee on Civil Rights for the SF Bay Area
Lee Tien - Senior Staff Attorney, Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF)
Susanna Castillo-Robson - Registrar and Campus FERPA Compliance Officer, UC Berkeley
*Hosted by the Berkeley ACLU Sponsored by: ASUC, ASUC Academic Affairs Office, Student Representatives to the Academic Senate On last Friday, Oct 12th, both Houses of Congress passed anti-terrorism legislation that will drastically threaten the civil liberties of EVERYONE in this country. Some of the most dangerous provisions include allowing for indefinite detention of non-citizens, removing judicial review from the expanded use of wiretapping, secret searches, and access to sensitive private records like student records, allowing the government to read emails and track the web browsing of virtually anyone, and expanding the definition of the word terrorism to include almost ANY act of protest against the government. President Bush will almost certainly sign these new provisions into law this week. Every person in this country, and especially here at UC Berkeley, the national heart of open discussion, debate, and dissent, needs to know about this legislation and how it will affect them. To that end, the Berkeley ACLU is hosting a teach-in on this federal legislation on Oct 25. Speakers at the teach-in will discuss exactly what the legislation says and what that will mean for all of us. There will also be speakers from the UC Berkeley administration to discuss issues specifically related to students, such as governmental access to student records. After the speakers speak, there will be a question and answer period open for questions from the audience. This legislation affects YOU! All students, faculty, staff, and community members are strongly encouraged to attend. For more information about the teach in go to www.BerkeleyACLU.org or contact mjmurray@uclink.berkeley.edu. For more information about the legislation go to www.aclu.org. *This event will provide a forum for everyone to learn about their rights, regardless of their political views. The Berkeley ACLU is completely neutral on foreign response to Sept 11. *The Berkeley ACLU is by no means against all new security measures. But new measures must not violate our Constitution and infringe upon the freedoms we as a nation hold so dear. Freedom and security are not mutually exclusive. Wheelchair accessible
