Columbia Helicopters Harass, Endanger Activists on Gypsy Mountian

by Remedy
Helicopters are a hazard to forests and activists.
columbia_helicopter.jpg
Activists on Gypsy Mountain are being harassed and endangered by employees of Columbia Helicopters, an international company based in Oregon contracted by Maxxam/Pacific Lumber to fall trees and yard them with helicopters. The giant, double-propeller helicopters have become an annoying mainstay in the skies of Humboldt county since the area was opened to helicopter yarding several years ago.

Activists on the ground near the yarding zone made their presence known, both verbally and over walkie-talkies used by activists and workers alike. In a move similar to the one that brought them so much negative attention when they recklessly endangered Julia “Butterfly” Hill during her treesit in the ancient redwood known as “Luna,” Columbia Helicopters circled dangerously close to treesitters in the redwood named “Aradia.”

Helicopters also harassed activists on the ground. To ensure the Columbia Helicopter crew knew they were there, one activist climbed a tree and waved an orange flag from the top. Columbia responded by buzzing the treetop activist.

The activist, going by the forest name “Gizmo,” descended the tree after being shaken by the menacing fly-by. Upon reaching the ground, two Columbia employees wielding plastic zip-ties (the layman’s handcuffs so preferred by Pacific Lumber) chased Gizmo down the treacherously steep hillside, at one point trying to kick his legs out from underneath him. Gizmo managed to escape them, though not without minor injury.

Aside from the plastic zip-ties, Columbia took another pointer from Pacific Lumber and continued to work with people in the area, displaying a dangerous disregard for the safety of workers and activists alike. It would be easier for them to chalk it up to carelessness if it wasn’t for Columbia’s past mistreatment of forest activists. In addition to yarding and flying hazardously close to both people on the ground and those in the trees, activists in Freshwater received an ominous visit from one Columbia Helicopter employee last spring who boasted “I could hit ‘em with my rifle,” as he eyed treesitters high in old-growth redwoods.

The “Grandmother Tree,” site of another treesit on Gypsy Mountain and subject of a raid by PL contracted climbers last week, is still standing but has been severely limbed.

For the last time, the tree named Burl ("the grandmother tree") was never intended to be cut. The only damage that has occured to that tree has been due to activitists residing in Burl. Climbers had to remove limbs to extract platforms and equipment to prevent activists from going back up the tree. They needed to keep activists out of the tree so they could yard the logs on the ground.
If no one ever went up that tree, there would have been no harm done. Please stay out of Burl before you cause him more damage.

I think it is interesting how some people advise others to eschew ownership under the guise of cheif seattle's wise words that we cannot own the earth (land) when we are a part of it. Yet those same people freely name things, i.e. "Gypsy Mountain", "Aradia", "Luna", "The Grandmother Tree", etc., when naming is universally recognized as a method of claiming ownership or power over something or someone. Curious. It sounds a lot like the have nots want some of what the star bellied sneetches have.
by Brigader
Now the activists are guilty, right? Bullshit, they deny hat they planned cutting the tree in first place just because the case atractted national media coverage. As for the chopper, one should do what Charlie did to the ones I flew in the 'Nam: get a good, cheap SA-7 missile and wipe it off the sky. You can always blame Al-Qaeda later...
by to mr cross
i don't see where remedy aka jeny card, not jenny, is trying to be someone she isn't. that image might have been utilized because columbia lied to the activists who spoke to their office in aurora, oregon. i believe the activists on the ground off hwy 36 where told their copters would never do that or have never done that. well the proof in the pudding. perfect example that these multi-nationals lie through their assholes. mr. cross why you criticizing people for being active. you an armchair activist or you work for PL now?

It's refreshing to see your inability to spell simple words. u r an idiot of the highest caliber. The point made, which you missed, (not hard to figure out why) is that in the enviro's desire to make current events to seem as desperate as possible, they will go to any length - including outright lying, falsification of records, photos, and any other media they can get their hands on. You are a stupid pawn. Checkmate.
by Verbal Sally
The sky is falling. The sky is falling. The world is warming. I feel hotter than I did last year. The last redwood is being cut. I am burning from lack of shade, and I am choking from lack of oxygen. I live on the toe of an ancient slide. My house is moving. I live in Freshwater and Elkriver. My house is flooding. I am an idiot activist.
by Philophel
The names given are forgotten over time. Death is forever.

You're dismissed.
by Maxxam Bankrupts Humboldt
There is no reason to exaggerate. The water is being poisoned, the rivers are being filled in, the salmon are being killed, the residents are billed for the clean-up while they suffer the damages, and the government is in league with corporate timber. Columbia Helicopters is harassing activists by flying their helicopters and 1000 year-old logs close to treesitters. It looks the same in 2003 as it did in 1998. Loggers falling trees at people on Gypsy Mountain looks the same now as it did five years ago, except back then it was a PL logger with better pay than the contracted workers doing it now. Maxxam wants us to smile, or be silent, or play dumb while they steal resources, stability and our rights. I see some of you are falling for it.

(1.) An ad hominem is not a rebuttal.

(2.) The most important move in the game is not the checkmate, but the blunder. You just made one.

You don't play much, or perhaps you lose a lot. Want a game?
by Shunka Wakan (shunka_2002 [at] yahoo.com)
I believe the purpose of posting that picture from the attacks on Luna and Julia "Butterfly" Hill is to show that there is a long-standing pattern of abuse from the Columbia Helicopter workers. This is no surprise, since most of them do not reside in Humboldt Co., so they have virtually no accountability to the people who live here, much like Climber Ox, who thinks that he can just come here and nearly kill people, and then disappear out-of-state.
We hope and pray that no one is hurt or killed.
We're getting into the habit of calling the FAA when this kind of stuff happens...how many FAA violations can you rack up before you get shut down for investigation, or worse?
Save Gypsy Mountain...it's simple, it's effective, and we can end the conflict there, finally, after more than five years now, we could end the conflict there.
Encourage Robert Manne to take us up on our proposal to save Gypsy Mountain by adding it to Grizzly Creek State Park...I would say that it's not too late, that it's never too late...or, let's do a conservation easement, similar to the Luna easement, with a 500' buffer zone, maybe...adding Gypsy Mountain to Grizzly Creek State Park would be best, so that anyone could hike up Gypsy Mountain WITHOUT RISKING ARREST.
We need to start focusing on the solution...aren't we all most interested in ending the conflicts and finding a workable solution? That's what I'm interested in, what about you?
Nice to know that you're paying such close attention to the clothes I wear...that jacket came in a box of donations, thank you.
Remember, for every one finger pointing out, there are three pointing back.
Let's see...PL donated over $80,000 to Gray Davis over the past three years, including $10,000 just a few weeks ago to "fight the recall"...talk about wasting money, eh? Well, I see it pays off in the end, when Davis makes the payback to the tune of over $18 million. Again, could any resident get that price for "their" land? Yeah, jack up the appraisal, and then call it a "donation to the state" when you slice a few million off the top...great PR trick...too bad we all see through it, and are exposing it to the public.
And Maxxam/PL/Davis just couldn't find it in their hearts to include Gypsy Mountain in their Grizzly Creek State Park expansion deal...the Gypsy Mountain conflict could be over right now, if you had just included Gypsy Mountain in your deal.
Like I said, it's never too late.
Follow Maxxam/PL's money trail...from domestic abusers like Eric Schatz and his gang of corporate thugs, all the way to a high-rise in Houston, while the poor families in Scotia, Rio Dell, Fortuna and the Van Duzen River Valley suffer from low wages, crappy benefits, impaired watersheds, and agro out-of-state workers who just come here to thrash the place, party, fight, and then leave with their male egos raging and their pockets full of money that should have stayed in Humboldt County.
So follow Maxxam's money trail, if you have the stomach for it.
Where do EF! donations go? I've said it time and time again, and I'll say it again:gear, bills, food, fuel(ugh!).
Your allegations only reflect your own guilty conscience.
Save Gypsy Mountain, and end ALL violence.
With Love, Light, and Re-evolution,

Here in the Pacific Northwest people have existed in harmony with redwoods for thousands of years. Tanoak groves interspersed amongst the redwood forest ecosystem provided protein packed acorns. When the rivers were healthy salmon swam upstream to spawn and were treated with respect by the Yurok and other tribal peoples..

Why is MAXXAM corporation unable to show respect to our Mother Earth? Why does greed and destruction overwhelm sustainability?

Native wild rice has lived in the deltas of the rivers for thousands of years, downstream from the old growth redwoods. We can learn to respect Mother Earth and enjoy the upcoming harvest season..
by big
PL didn't get a great price for that 664 acres. Like many other hundreds of acres that ia now parkland, PL sold it for way under cost.
Come on Shunka tell me what they were paid per acre. And what is the value of the Old Growth timber on it? Plus the base value of the land?
P.S. Nice try about the photo.

What's the cost of stolen land, biggist?
All so-called "timber production zones" are stolen land, taken through murder and relocation.
It's only through this corrupt system that any of you get any money for any land. You don't own it, and no one else does, either.
You're lucky that we're even willing to discuss buying groves from you...we do it with great disgust for the system, and with love for the trees. Saving trees is the only reason that we would ever even consider participating in your charade of private property.
You got your payback from Davis...hope you're happy.
Unfortunately, you forgot to include Gypsy Mountain...why, so that you could extort some more money from the public for some more stolen land?
Maxxam/PL should donate Gypsy Mountain to the people, if they really cared about the community, about saving marbled murrelet habitat, about a "Forest Peace Alliance," about the lives of the people who will never give up Gypsy Mountain, because our dear brother was murdered up there, and Maxxam/PL should realize how bad it makes them look when they desecrate themselves on Gypsy Mountain.
Study your history, biggist...try "People's History of the United States" by Howard Zinn...get back to me when you've read the whole thing a few times through.
Save Gypsy Mountain!!!!

you are telling me that to keep eight "volunteers" in trees it takes a constant pressure for donations ?
for what ? the volunteers them selves have posted to this sight complaining of the equipment being in "dangerous disrepair" and that support is "iffy" at best
(like when one person had to go down to woodies store to beg for food, and bet extra napkins "for toilet paper" which was promised but never supplied.

what about the ground area around the sits, strewn with fecies, bottles garbage, papers, discarded clothes. YOU ARE DESECRATING THE FOREST WITH YOUR PRESENCE.
but you would not know this because, when the going gets rough you get going...down to the market for a few drinks in the parking lot.

now we ask again! where is the money you have been collecting in our name?

Your attempts at using the Roma culture to paint us as racist is a very transparent trick, and we're not falling for it.
You disrespect our culture, too...you are painting Gypsies as crooks, thieves, etc...we are the travelers, the free people, the musicians, the poets, the spirits who refuse to be tamed.
Your postings only reinforce the stereotypes that you are so adamantly opposed to.
Or that you pretend to be so adamantly opposed to.
Are you really of Roma heritage? Or Roman?
As for your fabricated disgruntled tree-sitter postings, just know that the tree-sitters are getting what they need, and I'll break it down one more time, for the donors and the curious:donations=gear, communications, food, fuel, outreach. No corruption.
There you go, so go back to the drawing board and come up with some new angles, because we all see through your COINTELPRO tricks.

Damn Shunka that was your worse comeback yet. You totally side steped the issue of the cost of the land . So try again. What was PL paid per acre for the land? Was that market (yes in dollars) value. Or did PL give the State a good deal? Can you do the math?
by Gypsymoth
Damn Brother Wilson,
You are on a roll. But dependance on Zinn is sad. When he was at Humboldt State two years ago he said harvesting redwoods increased damage from hurricanes. Not the most erudite of statements.
The fact that you have read that book, or any book all the way through is impressive. Try reading a THP that you are protesting sometime. Then you can focus attention on places that will actually be harvested. Instead you help send folks blindly into the woods. Why stop yarding when the rees are already bucked?

Keep up the Crazy Brother.

Log on.

but it seems this group is given to paranoid delusion.

So what that you are suffering. So what that your houses flood, your wells are filled in with silt, that you have to spend tens of thousands of dollars to jack up your house and that the government protects the corporations that violate you. So what that your home business is suffering because of the destruction to your property by Maxxam. Unless you are a scientist employed by corporate timber, your knowledge, opinions, damages, inconvenience do not matter. For you are simply a pee-on and have no rights. God bless Corporate America.

I think its like really cool to dog on people who oppose environmental destruction, and to defend corporate CEOs, even though they are stepping on my rights as well as everyone elses. I think its neat that workers are being exploited. I think its cool cancer-causing agents are sprayed on the earth and in the water.
by J. Edgar
Wow, that's a similar tactic to one used by corporate timber. Maxxam's PR team makes up lies about EF! money and uses COINTELPRO guidelines to disrupt nonviolent activists in hopes that people will forget about the clear-cuts and herbicides that destroy water quality.

by chainsaw duelist
I am positively overjoyed to see that at least one poster has no clue as to who his opposition is. Without too many details......Yes, I am college educated - M.A. in English. I am most definitely not management in any shape or form. I am an ex timber faller, logger, equipment operator, and forester. I really don't care about MAXSCAM, COINTELPRO etc. or any of that other worthless shit. I am not paid to be here, but since local timber is my life, I am simply dedicated to refuting your dumbass lies and juvenile misunderstandings. Oh, and I am truly in the know, so your transparent accusations are laughable since they are merely the rudimentary regurgitations of the dogma you have so gullibly wolfed down. Perhaps during the initial wolfing, you got some spatter in your eyes which now prohibits you from opening them? Nah, it's just easier to growl over what you've already swallowed, isn't it?
Wow, those guys flying those helicopters should really be more careful. Those big ones with the double rotors generate so much wind force they could knock someone out of a tree, knock someone down on the ground or even worse...
I know from experience with the Air traffic safety perspective, that the FAA and DOT treat any type of situation involving aircraft buzzing human beings to be very, very serious. The angle of the project I saw was to keep the planes all a safe distance from each other given that there are over 10,000 in the sky or many more at once. The computer programs that give valuable information on weather conditions and radar locations are designed to keep everyone SAFE up in the air and not to worry of any danger of other aircraft being too close. To hear that people who are somehow angered in a personal way, might "Hover" or "Buzz" actual people in a tree or on the ground is really disturbing news. If someone has not filed a report with the FAA about this they should. This is certainly illegal. Columbia should have an anger management and flight safety FAA rule check. They will find that any aggressive behavior with any aircraft is grounds for being grounded.... period...

the fable of "Gypsy" is no diffrent.

"when in doubt" - follow the money
by Shunka Wakan (shunka_2002 [at] yahoo.com)
Yeah, you wish that Gypsy's murder was a fable.
The facts, for anyone just joining us, are these:
Maxxam/PL killed an Earth First! activist, David "Gypsy" Chain, on September 17th, 1998, when one of their employees knowingly and malicously fell trees DIRECTLY TOWARDS citizens in the woods.
Even though the threats leading up to this blatant act of violence were caught on video tape, as hard evidence, Maxxam/PL worked in collusion with a then-very-corrupt (more than now) Humboldt County Sheriff's Dept. and Homicide Investigation Unit.
Some of the biggest liars are:

Maxxam/PL, for denying their responsibility
Terry Farmer, the corrupt ex-D.A.
Dennis Lewis, the corrupt ex-sheriff
Juan Freeman, the corrupt homicide detective

So far, Terry Farmer and Dennis Lewis are out of office, and Maxxam/PL had to finally admit their guilt in an out-of-court settlement, after three long years of preparing for a civil suit and listening to Maxxam/PL/Humboldt Co. Sheriff's Dept. LYING about Gypsy's death.
A Gypsy Memorial was established as a condition of the settlement, even though Maxxam/PL cut trees that would have been saved in the final Gypsy Memorial, and cut them right around the time that we were doing depositions for the Gypsy trial, in 2000.
Within weeks of the settlement, literally, Maxxam/PL decided to "cut their losses" by marking a brand new timber harvest plan(THP) on Gypsy Mountain, just up the ridge from where they murdered Gypsy.
This new THP includes "Aradia," a tree that Maxxam/PL KNEW was occupied by Earth First!ers at the moment of Gypsy's murder. Maxxam/PL were sore losers in the Gypsy case, so now they want to take it out on Gypsy Mountain, on Earth First!, and on Gypsy's spirit.
Does it get any lower than desecrating the place where a man was killed?
Save Gypsy Mountain!
The truth will prevail, no matter how hard and long you try to cover it up.

who was with Gypsy when the tree fell on him?

there were 7 others with Mr. Chain when Ammons deliberatly fell the tree on him. plus rhett reabock, ammons spotter/gofer, and a few others on the mtn. bucking or yarding trees.

who was leading the operation in the forest?

maxxam was obviously leading the operation. they Leveraged the timber bond notes to the point that hurwitz had to triple the cut rate in order to pay off the interest on the debt. again, this was at a time when feinstein's hubby was sucking hurwitz's cock behind the scenes brokering the headwaters scam.

who lead him into the path of the tree?

no one lead mr. chain into the path of the tree. he had grabbed some food with the other forest defenders. upon standing up from eating, ammons lied in wait and dropped the tree at the group and mr. chain was unable to get out of the way.

who refuses to take responsability for putting his followers at risk?

what followers, forest defenders aren't followers. but i guess if your going to be critical, ask anderson why PL's most hot headed logger was placed in an area where they knew protests were going to take place in an illegal logging operation. CDF issued violations in that THP. also, ammons commonly bragged his intentions were to fuck a EF!er and bag one of them. the bagging part was he meant and intended to kill one of them men. real machismo piece of shit.

who still refuses to be interviewed by police about the incident?

not sure on that one, but ya ever read the coaching done by juan freeman with ammons telling him how to answer his questions during the interview following the murder. ever question whether juany boy is a competent detective who gathers evidence and leaves his political bent to kiss the timber industries ass aside when investigating. was juany boy a neutral fact gatherer or was he complacent in covering at a minimum, negligent manslaughter. ok, so maybe it wasn't first degree murder, yet at a minimum, it was manslaughter.............................................

Let him who is without sin cast the first stone. I guess Mr. jeff from BC has no problem letting the canadian govt. subsidize thier timber co. so they can flood our country with cheap cedar while clear cutting their forests to extinction. It now takes three trees to make the same dollar we could make on one tree 5 years ago. That really helps the sustainable forest ind.
