FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

YES ON L! Kick-Off Party with Barbara Ehrenreich, author of "Nickel and Dimed," writer Michael Parenti, and Comedian Will Durst; Community Activists Seek to Raise $50,000 in One Night

"I'm a single dad trying to work, get through school and raise a child in San Francisco. You can't survive in this city making minimum wage. There's a whole community of homeless parents at City College, just trying to get by."--Chris Kendrick

San Francisco, CA, Sept 22, 2003: 67% percent of San Francisco agrees that the minimum wage should be raised to $8.50, according to a recent poll. Supporters are expected to turn out in droves for the official launch of the "Yes on L- San Francisco Deserves a Raise!" campaign at the Brava Theatre on Friday, October 10, 2003.

The celebration begins at 6.30 PM, with a VIP reception featuring acclaimed author Barbara Ehrenreich, whose book "Nickel and Dimed" has spent over 58 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. The gala is shortly followed at 8pm by a stage adaptation of the author's journey through five minimum wage jobs as a waitress, a maid, a nursing home helper and a Walmart "Associate." Longtime member of the San Francisco Mime Troupe Joan Holden has deftly adapted the memoirs into a "provocative," (Seattle Post-Intelligencer) "smart and quietly comical"(The Boston Globe) survey that has been informing audiences all over America.

The Yes on L campaign is extremely proud to enjoy Ms. Ehrenreich's support, who has donated 125 autographed copies of "Nickel and Dimed" to the gala kick-off, as well as the comedic genius of Will Durst, who will be passing the hat and entertaining the audience during intermission. Yes on L has been endorsed by Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, State Senator John Burton, The Democratic Central Committee, San Francisco Labor Council, and many, many other San Franciscans. We invite all supporters to join us on Friday, October 10th, as we enter four weeks of intensive, grassroots efforts to get out the vote. Tickets for this event are sliding scale $50-5,000, and can be purchased through the YES ON L! website, http://www.sfminimumwage.org/ or by calling our reservation hotline, (415) 395-9050.

We all can make a difference in the lives of 54,000 minimum wage workers. Please join us in making San Francisco a better place to live.
