Yesterday a group of about 25 Bay Area anarchists and anti-authoritarians held a protest at the Consulate General of Greece in San Francisco, and delivered a statement of solidarity with the Thessaloniki Seven, a group of political prisoners held since June 21, 2003. There have been various solidarity actions in Europe, please check thessaloniki imc for more information.

As the short march to the Consulate got underway, the police arrived quickly, responding with 5 squad cars and 9-10 officers on the scene. Protestors were able to make their way inside the reception area of the Consulate to deliver a letter of solidarity, which they read. A while after the letter was read, the protestors left the reception area of the consulate and took their protest outside.

Once outside, police officers told protestors they could not protest on the sidewalk because they were blocking it, although no pedestrians were nearby. Protestors argued that the sidewalk was public property and that they could hold their protest there, while the police argued that because the consulate was a residence, they could not. Instead of risking arrest, the protestors decided to leave after a few minutes.
During protests this summer against the European Union (EU) summit in Thessaloniki, Greece- over two-dozen people were arrested, seven of whom are still being held (Thessaloniki Seven). Originally, there were eight prisoners. However, an American, Jonathan “Slug” Crowell of Vermont, was deported and has to return to Greece to face a trial. All eight of them are charged with following: possession of explosives, resisting authority, and rioting.

Of the seven still imprisoned in Greece, three are Greeks, two are Spaniards, one is Syrian, and one is British. Not much is known about the Greek prisoners, two of them were moved to a detention facility for minors (Avlona) notorious for “suicides,” and Tsitsas is in Diavata prison along with the other four political prisoners. The seven prisoners are subject to beatings, harsh treatment, torture, and threats of rape at the hands of police and prison guards.

The two Spaniards held in Diavata prison are- Fernando Perez Gorraiz from the Basque region and Carlos Martin a CNT militant. The Greek press accuses Fernando Gorraiz of being an international terrorist and there is word that the courts will apply a new anti-terrorism law to his case. Carlos Martin will start a hunger strike on October 5, 2003.

Also held in Diavata prison are Syrian political refugee Souleiman Dadouk “Kastro,” and UK activist Simon Chapman. Souleiman Dadouk faces deportation to Syria and a likely death upon his return. In protest, Souleiman has been on a hunger strike since September 21.

while it's terrific for the kids to organize some extra-legal solidarity with some international comrades, it would have also been nice if the people who eventually participated would have been able to arrive at the assembly point at the time announced. i was there at 12:45, and by 1:00 there were all of eight people. what time did the march/demo begin? 2:00? some of us have things to do and waiting around for comrades to finally show up to an event is not one of them. it shows little respect or solidarity or ACCOUNTABILITY toward local comrades to constantly be late. you are the ones always saying that things in the bay area need to be more organized; being on time is indispensable to organizing.

Hi, I write from Madrid. I have read the information, thank you very much for your solidarity.
Here, in Spain, a campaign of solidarity is being carried out. Of course, it isn´t very powerful (not many people, not money).
In Madrid, there have been two gatherings in front of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In the first one, there were around 100 people. In the second one, there were 200. During this one, we decided to move from that place towards important streets, so that we could be more visible. Of course, the police finally attacked us. In Spain, we're used to that. Apart from that, there has been one march.
The campaign to free the seven of Thessalonika is being carried out by the CNT (National Confederation of Work , to which Carlos belongs), by the CNA (Anarchist Black Cross) and by the family and friends of the arrested Spaniards.
The big media don't care very much about the issue, although there have been something on the press once or twice.
As regards your action, I think it is very important to keep international solidarity. We have paid attention to the problems of the webmaster of Raisethefist, Sherman Austin.
To finish with, excuse my irregular use of english.

Hi from Spain!

Thanks for you solidarity with Thesaloniki 7 and the people arrested in BCN.

I have to precise that Fernando (arrested in Thesaloniki) is not from the Spanish Basque Country region, althought it has a "Basque" Surname. The other spanyard guy arrested in Thesaloniki also has basque surnames.

You know that in basque country operates a left-nationalist terrorits group called ETA, that gives excuse to our gobernmet to repress more and better (it is our local AL-QUAEDA).

You know that the chargues that the two spanish guys are accused for in Greece are incredible, to be a kind of super-anarcho-terrorist wanted in many countries, what obviusly is false.

In Greece they have no support but from the anarchist movement, all the newspapers gives the Greece Gobernment version, instigated (I think) by Spanish gobernment, that continues his fight against the anarchist movement stronger day bay day.,

Sorry for my little english, and again Thank

well truth is there werent just a couple of dozen arrested but way more up to the range of a hundred...
second the claim made in a previous post that the prisoners have no support from anarchist circles in greece is not true either... leftist circles sure, but not anarchist... check yesterdays posts in thessaloniki imc site for radio station and news agencies takeovers in support for the prisoners. also in the past various demonstrations and other actions took place and ... of course much more can be done... take action
