Raise the minimum wage so it's MUCH easier to justify exporting jobs to India and China, which I know you racist pigs would HATE to see!
by X
Yes, raise the limit so they'll export all waiters to China.... and you thought it took a long time to get a table before!
Uh, hey, some jobs CAN'T be exported... and by the way, just out of curiosity, how much exportable industry do we have in SF?
by Realist
Raising the minimum wage is just plain dumb. The net effect is the loss of jobs. Just extrapolate the raise to a higher number and then pretend (TRY) to be a business owner. Poof, you are fired. If you own a company with low margins or have an excess of people fighting for menial jobs and the minimum wage goes up, then somebody's getting fired! This is proven Economics 101.
The proper logic = IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO LIVE IN A CERTAIN AREA...... leave! You can't change the demographics with such a small item, it simply WONT happen.
If you are bussing tables because you are doing it part time while living with mommie, then raising the minimum wage will not help you succeed in life. If it is your main wage source, (trying hard to not be demeaning but being realistic) then either work longer hours, sack groceries or get a better education or do some landscape work. Increasing the minimum wage is not the way to increase your salary...try PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY. Minimum wage is a stepping stone, use it as such.

Volunteer to Raise the Minimum Wage!

well, knock your self out!
tip every one you see..!
when you go out for lunch and the check comes STAND UP AND DEMAND TO PAY MORE FOR YOUR MEAL ! it's your right to be sure that you have paid as much as you can.

to x, realist, knock yourself out and like-minded imbeciles:

the cost of your latte and biscotti which i hope you choke on next time is equivalent to a person's hour of labor? and what ever made you think that any job paying minimum wage must be a cush job...like factory jobs, cannery jobs, working in the fields, yes even working in a restaurant...?

quote from realist: (what an asshole)

Realist? What an idiot. What a complete idiot. No, make that one third of an idiot. Together with x and knock yourself out...maybe they can make one full idiot.

to Liz ,
who sits back and demands more money, but who is not interested in investing a little effort in the process.
you can sit and whine all you want. "may-be" some one will come by and throw a dollar in your tip jar (for your next nose piercing) but do not expect to work an unskilled labor position and make MBA wages, it just won't happen, no matte how much you whine about it. you might want to reflect on the topic..

Liz - you just "don't get it". It is not MY responsibility to pay more for items/service so YOU can make more money. It is up to YOU to take personal responsibility for your salary (or lack there-of). We (who make more than you) are not "idiots" or "afflicted". We are called the "vast majority" who are NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR WAGE. Start your own business or get higher up the ladder rather than WHINE about being oppressed.
The individuals who call us (who oppose M.W. hikes) "idiots" are proving their lack of intelligence and knowledge of basic economics and a free society. Stop complaining on the internet about how you DESERVE more money for no increase in output - try increasing your output or relocating to where you require less cash. It's basic, it's simple, it's true. For the other individual on this thread who wants me to choke on my biscotti - I don't like that particular food, but if I did, I would pay what I desire for it and it is none of your business how much! You are embarassing yourself with your stupidity and weak justifications.
by Realist
I see you got censured on this thread. What's the matter, can't make your point without using demeaning language? Obviously your gutteral hatred for the 'vast majority' is an indicator of the reason why you align with minimum wage for post-teens.
Take some personal responsibility for yourself (I'm sure you've heard that before) and improve your skills and selections. That way...minimum wage will cease to be an issue - at least for you. THEN you can give handouts to those trapped by their intelligence and see first hand how FUTILE that is.

"Number of children whose parents will get a raise by increasing the local minimum wage: 29,850"

I think it is insane to have kids if you are only making minimum wage. Even if you can somehow arrange child care, it will be incredibly difficult to pay for/go to school to increase your skills to raise your wage.

What has changed is the level of taxation and the states burden on the company owners. Something had to give...

We have faaaaaar too many regulations in California burdening business. Years ago, you paid you help - now you pay a lawyer and sky-high insurance because there are so many handouts. Ask any inner city hospital administrator, he/she will tell you clearly. Watch our tax money get flushed down the toilet.
And idiots like Cruz Bustamonte want to tax us MORE after spending MORE. There will be a mass exodus of business out of California. Then there will be a severe excess of moderately or poorly trained workers looking for jobs. At that point - look for the ALL wages to go DOWN! (it wont by legislation, but supply vs demand for labor will tilt. The average wage will drop).
When businesses thrive, then wages will go up. Minimum wage will cease to be an issue, except for those just starting out.

"Capitalist Oppression", as you call it, was not brought up by the vast majority of Amercians during the boom years. Seems to me, that the boom years coincided with the death of unions. Now housing and most big ticket items (cars, SUVs, HDTV etc), for the last 4 years are still booming as high tech is playing catch-up from overcapacity.
The anti-capitalists want to regulate and oppress business. When that happens.... gooooood-byeeeeeeee to the middle and lower paid positions. This has been proven over and over and over.
Business in a free capital society means you have the power, as an employee, to leave any company that you feel is not compensating you to your desires. What part of that do you not understand? When the state gets in the knickers of the businesses, you get what the USSR got.... poor goods, poor service, sky high unemployment and eventual destruction from within. Now the former soviet republics are struggling with converting to a free market. It will take time. Ask anyone from the Ukraine, Latvia.... they will happily state how much better it is now. they are still jealous of our (still freer) market.
Having the state and/or federal government tell business what they should be paying will build the same inefficiency into the private sector as there is in the government sector. You want the local stores as efficient as the DMV or the Workers Compensation Board???? All will agree that the government should set certain standards for all businesses for safety, health, hygiene and the environment and hold business accountable to those. But get the government out of the knickers of the big and small businesses. If not, you will see them meld into one entitity and then POOF all goooooooooone!
