Pictures from San Francisco INS Protest

by Z
First they came for the Islamic Fundamentalists
and I did not speak out
because I was not an Islamic Fundamentalist.

Then they came for those from Iran, Iraq, Syria, Libya and Sudan
and I did not speak out
because I was not from those countries

Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.

The INS has detained hundreds of individuals from Iran, Iraq, Syria, Libya and Sudan who voluntarily went to the INS office to register. Ms. Banafsheh Akhlaghi, an attorney from San Francisco, reports that the detainees have been treated inhumanely: shackled, standing for hours, no drinking water, 2-3 hours sleep, and confinement. Last Wednesday 12/18, thousands of people demonstrated in front of the U.S. Federal Building in Los Angeles. Thanks to the hard work and passion of these people who peacefully voiced their concerns, many of the detainees of the Los Angeles branch of the INS have been released, many without bail. However, detainees are still in jail, some since Dec. 5th, in other regions.

Is ANSWER involved in this at all? I only ask because they're the best ones for getting fliers out there. It would be good if there was more advance notice for the demos - are they scheduled to continue? I wanted to go today but couldn't. Thanks for the good coverage.

I appreciate the people who took the time to protest the cruel detention of so many immigrants who were trying to be cooperative and obey the law. They don't deserve to be separated from their families, or deprived of due process.

Repeat your own propaganda long enough and you will actually begin to believe it.

Aliens who have violated the conditions of their authorized period of temporary stay in the US are subject to arrest, detention and removal. Why should anyone be alarmed about INS enforcement action that is designed to preserve our nation's sovereignty?

Let's not conveniently forget 9/11.

"INS enforcement action that is designed to preserve our nation's sovereignty?"

Wow, PATRIOT is such as idiot that he can't even understand that when you arrest people who come in voluntarily to register, they won't come in anymore.

And guess what, infant patriot? That's how you make your own home-grown terrorist. And that's how you grow HATE in all the other nations. You know, when you treat their people like sh-t?

Go back to your video games. You're not old enough to be online yet.

The title of one of the photos is misleading. A cop interrupted the speaker because he thought he was an organizer. He wanted to know if civil disobedience was planned, and wanted to make sure people knew not to block the sidewalk or the entrance. There were no organizers, but he ended up talking to someone from Copwatch.

He and another federal cop were really cool and even moved a cop car so there was spillover space in front of the building onto the parking space. Then they disappeared back into the building. They were very nice and we appreciated that.
