Modesto Protests War
About fifty people protested in Modesto yesterday against a possible war with Iraq. We marched down McHenry Ave. from Briggsmore to Sylvan, one of the busiest streets in town.

About fifty people protested in Modesto yesterday against a possible war with Iraq. We marched down McHenry Ave. from Briggsmore to Sylvan, one of the busiest streets in town. Modesto is a very conservative town, with a lot of opposition to progressive thought.
While I marched down Market in San Francisco two weeks ago and felt a part of something huge, protesting in Modesto was much different. As we walked there were many people waving, honking, and showing peace signs out their windows, however, there were also a lot of people shouting from their cars "nuke Iraq" or "bomb Saddam." That behavior didn't occur in the SF march, and I believe this gave me a false sense of the anti-war movements success. There are still areas that are oblivious to the horrors that our government has committed, and they are closer to home than I may choose to admit.
