Women In Black Protest in Berkeley

by Peter Maiden (pmaiden [at] pacbell.net)
Bay Area Women In Black hold a protest against violence in the Middle East in the Fourth Street area of Berkeley
womeninblack.jpg
Bay Area Women In Black held a demonstration Saturday afternoon, January 26 in the Fourth Street shopping area of Berkeley. They were protesting violence in the Middle East, which they believe stems from the continuing occupation of Palestine. The demonstration also marked Tu B’Shevat, the Jewish new year for trees, which is significant today for the way trees are being destroyed in the conflict. Israeli forces are uprooting olive and fruit trees in Palestine, and there has been arson of pine trees in Israel. About sixty protesters marched, catching the attention of shoppers in the upscale neighborhood. Bay Area Women in Black came together after the September 11 terrorist attack.

These are really beautiful photos! If only every event could be photographed like this!

Excellent!

let's reflect for a moment.

liberal white middle class americans, some of jewish descent probably non-observant, march around a liberal gentrified college town. that's pretty safe. continue to pay taxes of which the majority goes to a war machine that daily kills children of Palestine, Iraq, even to a certain extent Lebanon and Iran. who funds the war machine? you do. pretty weird thought huh?

have fun marching and don't forget to pay the army, i mean tax man.

war tax resistance now, words are not enough.

besides, the government doesn't need all that money any way, think of the fun you could have.
by How Pathetic.
They look like the've spent plenty of time pigging out in Cafe Rouge and Ginger Island. Maybe they should have spent some of that gormet lunch money to the Palestinians to purchase bus tickets to the Arab homeland of their choice. There are plenty to choose from. Anywhere but Isreal. Get real Berkeley. Stop making fools of yourselves. The whole world is laughing.
by Shame
Why don't they give some poor Palistinian family a homeland in the basement of their Berkeley Hills home?

Israeli Jews from the time they are children are
told that they are the "chosen ones." Many
actually beleive that all Gentiles are inferior
human beings.

Thanks to the over $100 handout of taxpayers money
by American politicians, Israel has the most
powerful military in the Middle East. With that,
has come an arrogant, racist attitudes that
attempts to justify the ethnic cleasing and
terrorism against Palestinians.

The polular politics of the Israeli right-wing
called "Transfers" that would forcebly ship
Palestinians out of their country is similar to
the policies of the Nazis, when Jews were removed
from their homes in Germany to make place for the
Germans.

It's time for Americans of all ages to protestour failed, racist policies

Why do you idiots criticize these women? They at least have the "balls" to stand up for what they believe in. So they protest, and it doesn't really change anything. Most protests don't do shit, because our government is a hypocrasy that no one trusts, supporting the worst examples of dictators. And what's wrong with increasing awareness in a society where most people have their heads so far up their ass that they think that CNN, Fox and MSNBC are "news?" We're one of the most ignorant societies in the world, and the government wants to keep us that way. So I say, F**k it, protest your ass off. WIB Berkeley has a pretty good turnout at their vigils., so I guess all those people are idiots too. At least they have a message, and a lot of people who support them are activists who organize other people, communicate and create dialog, share the truth in articles and websites, and educate people. I guess that's crap too. Calling them fat old white cows says more about your little pencil dick than anything else, so unless you are doing something about the problem youself, do us all a favor and shut the fuck up!

Okay, check this out. The US is spending $300 million on security for the Olympics in Salt Lake City alone. And how much is being spent on security for the Superbowl today?

How much money do we give to Israel every year in unconditional aid? $3 billion was given to them last year, 66% of which was for military aid.

Look at these figures and tell me HOW THE FUCK

Look at these figures and tell me HOW THE FUCK we can give so much money to FEMA and homeland security and STILL support Israel, and most people in this country still don't have a clue....

Protest may not be the answer, but if you have a better idea about how to raise awareness in our society, where apathy and indifference is a national pasttime, let's hear it. You're right, waving signs in Berkeley probably won't do much of anything...so let's think of some other ways to protest....

1. What would happen if one-third of the population in the US sent letters to the White House protesting human rights and occupation in Israel, and demanded that the US halt military aid support of Israel?

2. What would happen if, instead of putting little flags on the antennas of our SUVs, we bought cars that were fuel-efficient (or learned how to ride a bicycle?)

3. What would happen if we chose to educate ourselves about the Middle East, and began questioning American foreign policy? What if we started a campaign that educated kids to become culturally aware, learn about other religions like Islam, and what role the US has in the Middle East? What if we started educating kids about the relationship the US has with Israel? And what if we did the same with their parents, who are likely as equally as naive?

You think a bunch of older women wearing black and waving signs is crap? Fine, then come up with you own version of protest. But don't point fingers and critique other people unless you have a plan of your own.

Why don't they mind they own businesses??

...or does they want to move down here in the hood with the people they pretend to know? I think they'd run or call 911 if they saw a someone like me up in their hood.

"Israeli Jews from the time they are children are

Many Christians that I know believe that they are the "chosen ones", chosen by Jesus for salvation. Many Muslims believe that by keeping their covenants they will be blessed by Allah.

So a few of the major religions in the world basically believe that they are "the chosen ones".

You've managed to take the Jewish belief in this and turn it into a reason to hate all Israeli Jews. This is a brilliant new concept. We should come up with a name for this. Something catchy... how about "racism"?

Look at history! The earliest complete set of laws that survives is the Stele (law code) of Hamarabi. The number of provisions to control abuse of power shows that 5000 years ago activists were speaking truth to power.
