volunteer for public power campaign NOW

by barbara george (jpeters [at] local.org)
San Francisco's CRUCIAL campaign for public power needs your help!
hey there - If you want to really do something for peace, I recommmend working hard on the SF campaign for public and "renewable" solar and wind power in these last two weeks before election day Nov. 6. (You don't have to be an SF resident to volunteer or give money.) It's the best way I know to address the question at the heart of our current troubles: Is it a good idea for the US military to try to control the world in order for US energy corporations to control the world's energy supplies?

SEE BELOW FOR INFO ON HOW TO PLUG INTO THE CAMPAIGN

PG&E & other investor-owned-utilities in California embraced deregulation because it gave them the means to join the mad rush to dominate the world market for energy. They forced us to pay them $28 billion to bail out their nuclear power plants, then they spent that money to buy up power plants and energy supplies around the US & around the world. Their ambition is to gouge other people the way Californians were gouged this year.

WE CAN STOP ENERGY EXTORTION BY CREATING PUBLIC POWER UTILITIES IN OUR COMMUNITIES. Municipal utilities are not involved in global domination games. They are non-profits, devoted simply to providing reliable, affordable, clean energy to their communities.

LOCALLY-CONTROLLED PUBLIC POWER LEADS TO A CLEAN AND PEACEFUL WORLD. With public power companies, people can vote for their utilities to invest in conservation and renewable energy. You'll never be able to affect PG&E's decisions at the ballot box - except by voting to replace them with public power.

DON'T BE FOOLED BY SF CHRONICLE & WEEKLY ARTICLES OPPOSING THESE BALLOT MEASURES. They are cynically suggesting that THESE measures are not good enough, that in some vague future there will be a better way to create a municipal utility.

THESE MEASURES ARE BOTH FINE WAYS TO CREATE PUBLIC POWER. THEY ARE BASED ON TRIED AND TRUE EXISTING MUNICIPAL POWER UTILITIES. Yes, of course PG&E will sue, because it wants to keep milking San Franciscans to finance its global acquisitions. But in the end the people will win, if we keep our eyes on the prize.

Peace - Barbara George

*****PUBLIC AND SOLAR POWER ADVOCATES***** JUST TWO WEEKS AND COUNTING YES ON I(MUD), F (CITY POWER), H (SOLAR POWER)

Letís bring it home on November 6.

Today, the Chronicle endorsed AGAINST F and I. No surprises there, given their connections to PG&E. But it reinforces the fact that WE MUST GET OUR MESSAGE OUT since almost every consulting firm in San Francisco, and the mainstream press, are on the side of PG&E and the status quo. And they have a lot more money to buy the appearance of grassroots support than we do. What we have is REAL grassroots support.

THAT IS WHY IT IS CRITICAL to phonebank every free weekday night and precinct walk every free weekend day in the next two weeks.

****PHONEBANK SUNDAYS THROUGH THURSDAYS, 6-9PM, AND 3-6PM SUNDAYS AT 1188 FRANKLIN, SUITE 203, AT THE CORNER OF GEARY.

****PRECINCT WALK SATURDAYS AND SUNDAYS 10AM ñ2PM AT 1188 FRANKLIN, SUITE 203, AT THE CORNER OF GEARY.

****DAY VOLUNTEERING MONDAYS-FRIDAYS 10-5 AT 1188 FRANKLIN, WUITE 203, AT THE CORNER OF GEARY. Data entry, phoning volunteers, materials production.

COMMIT TO AS MUCH AS YOU CAN.... Democratic and public control of our electricity system, where surplus profits go toward lowering rates instead of PG&E pockets IS WELL WORTH YOUR TIME OVER THE NEXT TWO WEEKS. The creation of the largest and best funded solar and renewable energy installation in the world IS WELL WORTH YOUR TIME OVER THE NEXT TWO WEEKS. Shutting outdated and dirty power plants, in neighborhoods with the highest asthma rates in the state, IS WELL WORTH YOUR TIME OVER THE NEXT TWO WEEKS.

Thanks in advance. For more info, questions:
