Mission Anti-Displacement Coalition Hearing at City Hall

by Mission Anti-Displacement Coalition
Thursday, September 14, 5:00pm Rally 5:30pm Hearing at City Hall.
San Francisco, CA-- The Mission Anti-displacement Coalition (MAC) will rally, on the steps of City Hall, September 14th at 5pm, to protest displacement of Latino and working-class families by illegal development of dot-com offices in the Mission. The rally will also promote Prop. L, which if passed will stop illegal development of both upscale "live work" condominiums and dot-com offices.

This rally follows the assualt on activist Jonathan Youtt, ordered by Planning Commission President Anita Theoharris and carried out by Sheriff's Deputy Fields during last week's Commission hearings. In the ensuing melee president Theoharris postponed the hearing of MAC's appeal against the controversial conversion of the Armory at 14th and Mission in to a massive 250,000 square foot dot-com office complex.

If approved, this project will drive up rents in the surrounding area, encourage further real estate speculation and more illegal evictions by landlords. THE PLANNING COMMISSION HAS NOT REQUIRED AN ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT REPORT FOR THIS PROJECT!

MAC activists point out that the chaos and police brutality at last week's hearings were entirely the fault of President Theoharris:

"We've been going to the planning commission for six months now. We've brought thousands of people through there and we've always keep our end of it disciplined," said Eric Quezada, of Mission Housing Development Corporation which is a MAC member. "The chaos last Thursday was caused by Theoharris ordering the takedown of Jonathan Youtt."

MAC is demanding:
-- THE IMMEDIATE RESIGNATION OF PRESIDENT THEOHARRIS
-- A moratorium on market housing construction, including so-call "live/work lofts"
-- A moratorium on new office development in the Mission
-- A moratorium on illegal conversion of spaces to dot-com offices
-- Creation of a community planning process
-- And city funding for this community planning process

The Mission Anti-displacement Coalition, includes PODER, MEDA, MHDC, Mission Agenda and scores of Mission residents from diverse backgrounds.
